UPDATED: Sean Penn’s humanitarian romance “The Last Face” is being savaged on Twitter after premiering Friday at the Cannes Film Festival. Commenters on social media are describing the film, which stars Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem, as the worst of the fest. Others are also quipping that the picture is so awful that it destroyed Penn’s relationship with Theron. The duo broke up a year ago.
When critics weighed in, they largely echoed the flash reactions that bubbled up online.

I dislike Sean Penn intensely. But seems like the problem here isn’t the film or anything important. It seems like the audiences thought it was racist that two humanitarian aid workers could even have a spare moment to have romantic feelings for each other out on a jobsite.
The truth is it happens with aid workers, military people today, etc. The truth is that the hard left audiences wanted red meat showing poor Africans suffering because of whitey.
Showing whites as aid workers was bad, and it was unforgivably offensive to show two of them in a shared intense situation having feelings for each other.
He’s literally in trouble now for not being leftist enough.
If there’s anyone I’d love to see hoisted on his own petard, it’s Sean Penn.
Agreed. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Im just saying this wasn’t Canes judging it to be a poor film. It was people even more left than Penn saying it wasn’t ideologically pure enough.
