The world is still paying attention to millennials and their migration habits, despite Generation Z’s incoming threat. And while millennials appear to like cities, thanks to their good public transportation and myriad Apple Stores, a new study says some of the world’s biggest urban areas are in danger of losing their young people in the next 10 years.

Global initiative group YouthfulCities interviewed 15,000 millennials in 34 cities all over the world, splitting them up by continent. And of those millennials, 58 percent said they planned to leave their city within the next decade, noting that they’re being driven out by high costs of living, safety issues, and problems with employment. …

Someday you have to grow up

Realize the cities suck for raising kids

Having a house bigger than a college dorm would be nice as well

And not having crack heads breaking into your apartment to steel your TV is good too

When they grow up they realize the corruption, taxes and costs of dem controlled cities is not worth a bar close by and potentially more loose women...

Sometimes, I like to watch these shows where people go house-hunting, armed with a list of “must-have” features and a price limit.

Usually, the price is way more than our suburban house costs.

Often these shows feature young people in a city such as New York or San Francisco, where a sum that would buy me a mansion in my town barely pays for a tiny, cramped apartment that is barely larger than my kitchen/dining room.

If you want a roomy place to live in a clean environment, you have to leave the city. There is no other option.

Finished graduate school recently and I don’t understand the need to move directly into a city. I’d rather live outside of it and somewhat near it for a job there so I can see things beyond busy streets etc.

Online work and tiny houses. There’s a concept.

Or, work from some sloop somewhere.

Taxes, fees, licenses, permits, surcharges, govt mandated utility rates, the extra charges you pay for those that dont pay their bills...

A millennial packs up and leaves the city. His daddy bought Tesla dies in a corn field. Where does he go? A BA in Psych, and two years as a barista are not big employment selling points in Shawnee, Kansas. Leftist restrictions on what would hurt his delicate sensibilities are rare, off campus.

Squealing and pointing at a bulge on a hip does not save people from a shooting, out here...

For a few of us mass transit is very much a good thing; a dear friend of mine needs wheelchair transport and just cannot afford her own van (they easily run over $20K and budget another couple grand for the special drivers license tests for hand control) but the city buses can take her.

The bounds of the city bus system and the special-transit system are literally the limits of where she can go without help.

Too bad, you self-absorbed, spiritually bereft, neo-hippie pissants. You've gone out of your way to help create this mess this society is in, and now you want to find safe haven out here in the heartland? You're an Internet-driven, immediate-gratification, let's-try-Socialism-again human cancer. Sit in your overpriced, roach ridden urban pest hole and ROT. We don't have Starbucks out this way, we don't give a shit about the price of arugula or even what that rabbit feed is, and it's a damn sure bet you wouldn't know how to start a chainsaw or till a garden if your life depended on it. And the second you walk into a ladies' restroom with my granddaughter inside because you feel like 'self-identifying' with your feminine half, I'll rip your schwantz off and nail it to your fecking forehead before Paul Blart, Mall Cop can come rolling his fat ass to the scene on his Segway. WE control the narrative out here. And our culture. Real men yank a splinter out and keep a tighter grip on their work if it's slippery from blood, not mince and prance over deciding whether their cappuccino should be vanilla or mocha. And seeing you urbane pseudo-males in your lumberjack beards and flannel shirts makes me want to beat you with an axe handle.

Sounds like one of my daughters and her husband. They rented an apartment and garage in San Francisco in a trendy neighborhood for 5 years. Lots of restaurants, sports bars and stores a block away, Golden Gate Park across the street, Ocean Beach nearby after a short jog. They really enjoyed the good life there. Then their second child came along and the one-bedroom apartment was too cramped for two kids. They moved to a suburb down the peninsula, the cost was less for a two bedroom apartment and parking stall, but not as exciting for them as SF was. Lasted for about a year, now they just moved to another city. Young people like the fast-paced city life.

Not to worry. The Obama Department of Housing is hell bent on bringing the urban core to your neighborhood. They are planning on giving housing vouchers for exurban and suburban housing.

Where will they go? Most don’t know how to drive a car, and few towns smaller than about 50,000 or so have any kind of public transportation. Also, once they are away from their hipster enclaves and amongst normal people, what will they do when confronted by the dual threat of non-pc conformist ideas mixed with a lack of safe spaces? Oh, the horrors!

I’m interested in this topic so I took a quick look at the report (pdf) and it seems like a a steaming pile to me, making sure we know that hipsters in Addis Ababa are “happiest”. What would be useful is more guidance for communities looking to make themselves attractive for millennials to come live there.

Why so many freepers diss millennials all the time? EVERY GENERATION was young once, even yours! Youth don’t have wisdom. Young people are smart and strong (I’m watching one doing a great job as goaltender for the TB lightning right now!). I am so proud of my millennial sons. Even if they didn’t walk uphill to school both ways in the snow.
