New York State lawmakers have combined two previous assisted suicide bills into the Medical Aid in Dying Act, and proponents boast that there are a number of safeguards.
But a pro-life leader in the state is warning of the safeguards that are not in the bill.
There is no requirement for counseling for possible clinical depression causing impaired judgment. Most people considering suicide are depressed it is a cry for help, said Kathleen M. Gallagher, director of pro-life activities for the New York State Catholic Conference.
There is no requirement for family notification to advise family members that their loved one is requesting a lethal dose of drugs, Gallagher continued. There is no requirement that witnesses to the request be adults, and one of the witnesses can be someone who stands to gain financially from the patients death.
The legislation, introduced last week, would allow mentally capable and terminally ill adults to request a prescription for life-ending medication, according to ABC affiliate News10.com.

In addition, the bill would force life insurance companies to pay families of those who use the law.
Yes. Most of the NYS legislators should consider suicide.....assisted or otherwise.
I’m sure plenty of New Yorkers are willing to help them.
L
I’d be happy to assist them, though I’d rather assist the Illinois legislature with the same task.
The perfect crime. A lethal prescription could be used to kill anyone.
Go for it, guys. Wipe the slate clean and start over with an assembly of citizens selected by random draw.
Oh. Wait a minute. Misleading headline alert!
They aren't talking about engaging in it themselves.
with chemistry manufactured by the same anti-American corporations who refuse to sell their wares for use in executions, no doubt.

Just wait until the insurance companies deny co-pay coverage for all treatments beyond euthanasia.
My insurance policy doesn’t pay for s***. Apparently I haven’t “maxed out” my deductible for the year (5 months in) and thus they pay zero. Of course they collect my premiums each paycheck. If I opted for the “other” plan and kicked in another $100+ a check they would “reduce” my medical bills (if they approve) with my own money.
These same clowns say a citizen should not be allowed to own a gun because someone somewhere might commit suicide with it.
Slippery slope...
I think it is appropriate.
Under Governor Cuomo, New York State has been attempting suicide, with every idea that the governor has put forward.
As a New Yorker I would happy to help these dreadful people do away with themselves.
Now that’s a funny headline.
Every single day I am gratified that I fled New York state (in abject horror, by the way).
WOW! the whole legislature? That would create quite a stink in the capitol if they don't get them cremated pretty quick!

Why call it assisted suicide? Why not just “post term abortion”? Could it be made freely available in all Blue States, and not limited to those with terminal illnesses, unless being a DemocRat is defined as a terminal illness? That seems to be what they are headed for, and it would eliminate a lot of mentally ill liberals.
post term abortion?
I like it! I have heard ‘doctor assisted suicide’ referred to as ‘retro-active abortion’, but post term abortion is pure genius!
What a misleading headline. As a NYer, I would truly appreciate suicide (assisted or not) of many elected officials. Prince Andy Sfaccimm would be a wonderful test case.
