Authorities are investigating after a part-time jail guard accidentally shot himself in the leg as he waited to interview for a janitorial job at a Florida Panhandle elementary school.
The News Herald reports that while 28-year-old Travis Anthony Holland waited in his truck on Friday, he decided to replace a spent round in his Derringer revolver before storing it in a secure compartment of the truck.
A police report says he shot himself in the thigh and was treated at a hospital.
Police initially said the incident didn't warrant criminal charges because law enforcement officers are exempt from a state law barring guns on school grounds. But the Panama City Police Department is still investigating, along with the Bay County Sheriff's Office, which runs the jail.
“HIRED!” ;)
But ... did he get the job?
Waffle House Elementary
Plaxico Burress? Is that yoU!?
I hate when that happens.
Lots of people get jitters when they have a job interview. :D
Those “derringer revolvers” are tricky.
part time corrections going for a janitor job at 29 and then shoots himself.
The man sounds like an idiot and who carries in law enforcement a revolver today?
OMG I have a job interview with the county hospital in 2 hours. Gosh I hope nothing happens to me when I’m over there.
Good luck! Stay safe and let us know how it goes.
+1.
“Other than that, how did I do?”
My ex-wife once worked for the Hanford Patrol for security on the Hanford site. During that time they hired a new patrolman whose last name was Bright and she told me what a derelict he was so I nicked named him Not-So Bright and she used that at work and it stuck,
Then one night on duty he was stationed at a remote guard station he decided to play with his pistol and ended up shooting himself in the foot.
Thank you, sure will =) I have another one in the same building on the 12th.
Lots of retired LEOs do. 38 special.
They make great back up guns.
So his nickname must have been changed to 'Stumpy'...or 'Lefty'?
They do and I agree, but he is only 29 and certainly not retired.
Part time corrections to cleaning kids crap in the bathroom is hardly a step up, especially here in FL where you have to do a law enforcement program for over 3 months for corrections and cops is 6 months.
Couple of thoughts.
This is the second story today about gun uncontrol in Florida. 1 on each coast.
What is a Derringer revolver? I have been carrying firearms on and off the job for over fifty years and have never seen or heard of a Derringer revolver. The accepted description of a derringer is a small two shot firearm.
I suspect he had something along the lines of a North American Arms sidewinder. A mini revolver, if you will.
“Look here kids, come on move in closer so you can all see. My name is Travis and I’ll be your new janitor. This here is a Derringer revolver...very tricky weapon. Let me show you how to load it”...and that’s when the trouble started.
