Gérard Dépardieu, the larger-than-life French star who once boasted that he sometimes drank 14 bottles of wine a day, says he has now given up the booze.

“I haven’t been drinking for some time now. I really no longer like drunkenness,” the 67-year-old, who is currently starring of the new Netflix series Marseille, told le Parisien newspaper.

The revelation surprised many French, who are used to reading regular reports about the actor’s drunken escapades, which include urinating in the aisle of an Air France plane bound for Dublin as it prepared to take off, forcing the aircraft to turn back.

A truly great actor, but alas one with a reputation as something of a libertine. He has also been a longtime tax refugee from his native France. Maybe he is getting bis life together.

Good actor. Has enjoyed life, and used sense to leave France to avoid confiscatory 90% taxes.
And what a world we are in. He ran to Russia to protect himself from confiscation of assets, and when there, decided to stop drinking.

A head shaker.

He had to have tapered his intake off over a fairly long period, probably months. Stopping alcohol intake "cold turkey" can result in a massive heart attack, or so I've read, on such sites as WebMD.

“14 bottles a day? Good lord how did he stop.”

Probably an exaggeration.

It’s like ex-amokers who always say they smoked 4-5 packs a day.

Makes for a better story.

14 bottles of wine a day? I can't even imagine that being true. That would be nearly 60 six ounce glasses a day or five glasses an hour over a a 12-hour period.

I might keep up with that pace for maybe an hour and a half.

I have a headache just thinking about it.
