This is not an awkward and embarrassing outreach to Hispanics. It's not aimed at Hispanics at all. It's aimed at white people. This is the kind of thing that Trump's basethe white working classviews as a perfectly sincere appreciation of Mexican culture. It says, "Yes, I want a wall, and yes, I want to deport all the illegal immigrants in the country. But that doesn't mean I hate Mexicans." It's basically an affirmation to Trump's voters that they aren't racists.
Plus it gets a ton of attention, and it also induces loads of mockery from overeducated PC liberals who don't understand a compliment when they see one. It's really a genius tweet.
Does everyone understand now? Trump is playing this game at a higher level than most of his critics.

I thought the tweet was fine - there are many legal, fine Mexican citizens. In addition, Mr. Trump’s desire to enforce the laws of the land includes ALL illegals. It just happens that many of them are Mexican.
There are illegals from many countries: Brazil, China, Venezula, Middle Eastern countries, all central American countries, but a majority are from Mexico. They all need to go - not just the Mexican ones.
His statement was certainly reminiscent of "I don't hate blacks. Some of my best friends are black". Such statements were never considered to be "playing this game at a higher level".
Man, they sure got that part right.
The adult in the room speaks.
One legal Mexican immigrant that I knew (married to a man born in America) told me that she, too, did not like the indiscriminate influx of unauthorized guests from Mexico. She, like many Americans, has a hard time finding a job sometimes, and the competition is cruel enough without the unauthorized guests.
Enforcing our immigration laws is not racist. I’m mostly Irish, but I would feel the same about illegal Irish immigrants. Anyone here illegally should be deported.
That became a joke back when free black America was a lot better behaved (just coming out of Jim Crow, or in non Jim Crow states) than they are now — i.e. there was no real reason to put up one’s guard to an unusual degree.
Now that they have been harnessed into “liberal” (illiberal) grievance games (and the same with the unauthorized Mexican guests) the scene is different. Context matters!
Yes. Fully 2/3rds of New Mexicans (where Caucasian non-Hispanic is the majority minority) don't want illegals to have drivers licenses, most don't want illegals here, as well.
Let’s hope his next tweet isn’t a picture of him eating fried chicken saying he loves blacks.

If it weren’t for cultural appropriation, we would have no culture at all.
I didn’t think Trump’s tweet was either brilliant or foolish, just bland or a bit fun. The responses to it though show that many Trump opponents are insane. I’m not claiming all are, but anyone who takes offense at a taco bowl is too delicate to be allowed out without supervision.
And Trump needs to talk turkey with Fox. Mexico can’t be, at the least, actively scheming to push people that it doesn’t want into America. It needs to be trying to take care of these people.
True, it would not be complete without watermelon (duckn & runnn)
Your tagline quote is one that Trump has taken to heart and why he has won thus far.
That tweet is priceless. I've never seen a politician flip the bird so publicly to his critics. And the writer is correct, this is directed at Trump's fans, not "wetback" Mexicans (as opposed to legal Mexican immigrants, of course).
The extreme left wing has been protected by political correctness for so long, they really are stunned when Donald pisses all over it like this. He's not afraid of them, and he's pointing out to us that we shouldn't be either.
