For myself, I find it difficult to justify sentences in excess of ten years. The death penalty should be used for any crimes that call for longer sentences, and any real criminal reform would start by making prisons far less hospitable to the inhabitants.

If someone can’t be reformed in ten years, then time to cull the herd.

I can. Given that hardly anyone who is sentenced to ten years actually does ten years, damn right we need it. Length of sentence is in proportion to heinousness and seerity of tge crime. For non violent serious felonies it is needed because they are crimes that didnt murder anyone.
