The 96 Liverpool soccer fans who died in the Hillsborough Stadium disaster were "unlawfully killed" because of errors by the police, a jury concluded Tuesday.

Relatives of the victims of the 1989 disaster, some wearing Liverpool scarves, were in tears outside a specially-built courtroom after new inquests into Britain's worst sporting disaster.

while confirming that the behavior of fans did not cause or contribute to the tragedy.

Really???? I saw a documentary on this and the police were incompetent but I did not get the impression the behavior of out of control fans, not the ones who got crushed, was not a contributing factor.

Used to live in Walkley just up from Hillsboro. View of Sheffield Wednesday stadium out the back window.

As a rule I go nowhere that I am around more than a hand full of people. Just a glimpse of what it may be like if/when our economy and logistical system has a major disruption.

I believe... and hope... what they meant was that the behavior of the FANS WHO WERE KILLED had not played a role in THEIR OWN deaths.

If the fans brought their own deaths upon themselves, then even any errors by the police would be inconsequential.

If it was that documentary I saw on ESPN, it’s been said that the local police didn’t have the proper guidance to control the crowd that day—a high-ranking police officer who had done sterling service controlling the crowd at the stadium had just left the force. If that high-ranking officer was still on the force, there was a good chance this tragedy may have never occurred.

some wearing Liverpool scarves

WTH? Is this some British euphemism for the hijab or something?

“Unlawfully killed”?

There is a way to have lawfully killed them?

I hate when I’m unlawfully killed while watching soccer.

I hate it more if I’m watching real sports.

My understanding is that it was dishonest fans...fans entering without tickets...that caused this.

Jury finds 96 soccer fans were 'unlawfully killed'...

What would it have taken to have made it a LAWFUL killing?

Yeah that’s my impression too. I think the police in general, and the commander in particular, are being used as scapegoats here. They are culpable yes, but they are not exclusively culpable.

It was ridiculous how they packed folks like sardines in soccer stadiums back then. Folks in games would literally pee in their pants during the game, because there was no way to get to the bathroom.

Now Heysel, that was a whole different story. And the resulting ban on English teams playing in Europe hurt Everton a lot, since they were at their peak then.

Heysel was horrible.

I sometimes feel the 39 killed in that disaster is not commerated enough at merseyside.

Liverpool tried to make some friendly gestures when we played Juve, but all their fans turned their back. They certainly have not forgotten. I don’t blame them.

The two cases are different though in the massive government coverup instigated by the South Yorkeshire Police. Incidently, the same Police Department behind the muslim rape/grooming coverup more recently in Rotherham.

As for any consequences for Everton because of it. Yes, it probably hurt you, but in the larger sense it seems to matter little.

Anyhow, just looking at soccer threads as I get ready for the Europa league final tonight.

BTW: Everton fans have been generally exemplary in support of the Hillsborough families. Even Martinez held a very moving speech a few weeks back.

You’ll never walk alone.
