The Olympic flame was lit Thursday in an ancient temple in one country in crisis and solemnly sent off carrying international hopes that Brazil's political paralysis will not taint the Rio Games that start in barely 100 days.

As the flame was kindled in the 2,600-year-old Temple of Hera at Ancient Olympia, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach and Rio organisers sought to rally support.

Who, today, would want to go to Brazil for the Olympics?

The nation has descended in chaos, graft, crime and utter disorder. Muggings are rampant.

Stay home and wait for America to catch up.

(What am I saying? We’re there already!)

Well they did beat out Chicago for the games. What would have been the difference?

To say nothing of the disease-ridden waters with which Olympic rowers, sailers, etc. must contend. Oh, and the Zika virus. Plus NBC has *the* worst coverage of any network. Ever.

No, thank you.

Horrible. I really miss Jim McKay and ABC.

Several Olympics ago I was in San Diego and the local cable had Mexican TV coverage of the games. I could not believe how much better their coverage was than NBC’s. They actually showed entire events without interrupting them for athelete’ biographies. They even showed contests where Mexicans weren’t competing. Of course they were pleased when Mexican athletes did well, but they didn’t center their coverage on them.

I was in Buffalo for the 1988 Games, and I couldn’t believe how much better CBC’s coverage was. Well at least until the Ben Johnson imbroglio and that’s all they would talk about.

I also think the end of the Cold War hurt, because we were fascinated by the athletes from the Communist countries, as if they were from another planet. Now, you have many athletes who live full-time in this country but still competing for their home country.

Does anyone still watch the summer games?
