Trump vs Priebus, or biting the hand that might feed you
Hot Air ^ | 4/19/16 | Ed Morrissey

“I don’t know,” Donald Trump told the Washington Post about whether he’d try to push Reince Priebus out at the convention, “I haven’t made that determination.” .....It goes right to the heart of the role of any party chair, this one in particular, and the way in which Priebus just might be the key in any scenario that produces a Trump general-election victory.

Comments on what might happen AFTER the nomination....

It won’t wait until the nomination, it will be June 7 when Donald Trump passes 1237 delegates.

Priebus has already stated he won’t be returning next year as head of the RNC. But I expect him to step down shortly after June 7 because he has allowed Romney to call the shots in using Cruz to stop Trump.

He might if Cruz is the nominee. If Trump is the nominee, I expect Priebus will stay on until after the election to make sure Trump doesn't install his own people at the RNC.

“Comments on what might happen AFTER the nomination....”

Whoever wins, Trump or Cruz, needs to call a press conference
and publicly fire Priebus in the most embarrassing way possible.

Hot Air has printed many antiTrump stories. Can’t take them as unbiased.

If Trump was the nominee, called a press conference, and said "Priebus, you're fired", Priebus would likely laugh in his face and tell him (correctly) "sorry, but you don't have the authority to do that."

Who started peddling this idea that the nominee can hire/fire the head of the RNC?

It's amazing. People build up in their heads this fantasy of how their preferred candidate is going to have all these magical powers, but they don't actually pay enough attention to try to understand the mechanics of how the power actually works.

A lot of people seem to think that "executive orders" can pretty much do anything, but they can't. They are limited in their effect, which is why Presidents still push for legislation. Even Obama is finding out that some of his executive orders don't have the power he thought they did.

Trump is talking about uniting the grassroots American republicans, not the UNIPARTY GOPe...
What about that do you not understand???

or have you been happy with the last 25 years of “politics as usual”????

You forgot "accuse all delegates of being on the take". I suppose "Little Marco" Rubio and "Look at that face" Fiorino are included in "insult every GOP opponent", so I guess you've got that covered.

And then when the party doesn't unite around him, he and his supporters will wonder why.

Oh, but surely you saw that movie, “300”.

There are approximately 300 in the Free Republic Trump Echo Chamber.

Coincidence? I think not!

By sheer dint of their awesome will, the FR Trumpeters can not only correctly prophesy ALL motives and ALL outcomes in this election cycle, but also bend logic, facts, and rules to ensure their prophecies are fulfilled!

It’s truly amazing when you think about it. Don’t think too hard though. :-)

Trump is talking about uniting the grassroots American republicans, not the UNIPARTY GOPe...

The "grassroots" includes all those unacknowledged, unacclaimed people who show up to work phone banks, stuff envelopes, attend party meetings, etc.. You know, all the stuff with which the rest of us -- including me -- couldn't be bothered. Those are the people who elect the delegates for state GOP organizations, who in turn elect the RNC, who in turn elected Priebus.

Trump's basically accused all those people of being crooked/on the take as well or at best, stupid enough to be supporting the "GOP-E"/Uniparty.

Let's see if the Trumpers who have been unwilling to do any of that stuff are going to spend days and days manning phone banks, doing mailers, etc., because I don't think a lot of those people he's insulted are going to be too thrilled about working to help him.

Oh, and I'd also point out that as much as you might like to pretend that the only people who care about his insults directed at other candidates are the other candidates themselves, I'd suggest to you that Republicans who supported someone other than Trump also may not be very appreciative of it either.

But hey, you don't need any of us, right? We're all just part of the problem, and you guys are enough to sweep Trump into office with a 50 state sweep just on your own, because you're the "Silent Majority."

We'll see how that works out.

Well said. There is also the fantasy about how you can drive away all your potential supporters and still win a national election.

Priebus won’t be able to stop Trump. He’s a paid employee chosen by some members. Most members will get behind Trump as the new head of the GOP.

No, I'm not the least bit confused. You are.

Obama was incredibly popular within the Democrat Party itself. So, when he suggested DWS for head of the DNC, the DNC obliged by electing her. And that has been the custom within both parties. If the President wants someone to head up the party, the respective national committee goes along with his wishes and elects his candidate. But only the committee itself has that actual authority.

What neither you nor Trump apparently understands is that is a custom only. It is simpy a function of the usual respect the President shows for his party, and the recognition of how important his support is to the party. But the President has no legal power to replace the head of the National Committee on his own authority.

Trump has essentialy been at war with the RNC itself. Stupidly, I might add, because most of the things of which he has complained are controlled by state GOP committees rather than the RNC. In any case, both Trump and the majority of his supporters (at least here on FR) have been openly disdainful/insulting towards the RNC, and towards the party as a whole. Heck, a large number of you guys apparently believe in "uniparty" and so openly want to destroy the current RNC. Why in the world would members of that RNC cooperate in their own destruction?

So I think it will be a cold day in hell before the people he (and you guys) have been insulting install as head of the RNC someone he prefers, unless he actually makes amends on his end.

As of right now, I expect the majority of the RNC would just flip the proverbial bird towards any Trump demand to replace the head of the RNC.

Trump has been accusing the RNC of being crooked and corrupt. Why would the people he's been insulting back him? They have absolutely no reason to do so, because as we already know, Trump voters are much less likely to be involved at the party themselves at the grassroots level.

By deliberately (and proudly) choosing not to be involved with the party itself at the state and local level, most Trump supporters have ensured that they'll have very little influence within the party itself even if Trump does win the nomination.
