A Grafton couple was arrested after their children were found walking by themselves along U.S. Route 50.

An 8-year-old girl, 6-year-old girl and a girl young enough to not know her age were walking down U.S. Route 50 across the Fetterman Bridge, according to court documents. The clerk at the Go-Mart on Weaver Street was able to bring the girls inside and call law enforcement.

Once a Grafton Police officer arrived on scene, the girls told him they were going to their grandmother's house because their mother, Dalena Austin, and their father, James Cain, didn't want them. They had three duffel bags packed full of clothes with them.

I’m guessing substance abuse is involved. Poor little things.

Heck, we walked all over town at that age and look how I turned out... Oh, wait...

... children were found walking by themselves along U.S. Route 50.

Now that's what I would call free-ranging kids.

During the depression, people were selling or trying to sell their kids.

"The grandmother now has custody of the three girls, police said."

Looks like the girls got what they wanted. I worry for Grandma . . .

... officers found a digital scale, four metal canisters of propane camping fuel, two glass vials containing a white, powdery residue, two glass containers with the strong odor of marijuana, a money lock box with several small plastic bags and a large plastic bag containing numerous smaller plastic bags.

I once came across a todler on a two way highway. I stopped and returned him to his grateful mother who didn’t realize he had gotten out. Never considered calling authorities.

Morgana, I don’t want to hit this too hard but IMO it
would be helpful to post the location of incidents like
this if the article is not clear. Ever have someone send
you an old newspaper clipping that included no date or
publisher info? It can be frustrating. I researched it
because the US 50 that I know winds up in Sacramento which
is not that far away from me. Low and behold my research
took me to West Virginia, across the continent. Sure,
the point of the story is what happened and not where
it happened but more detail is always better than less.

They used to make movies about kids doing stuff wandering away from home. Dennis the Menace, etc. Those movies were about adventure and fun. No one got arrested. Nowadays Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell would go to jail and Dennis would be taken from them. Sad state of affairs with the nanny state clamp-down on the rights parents used to have.

I walked down a busy hwy to and from school at that age. By myself. In the cold and rain. About that time, I was going to run away and mother helped pack my bag. Of course, that was reverse psychology. Another time, grandpa went to town without me so I decided to walk the 4 miles. Grandma found me about halfway there.

Granted, these kids don’t have much of a home life but today’s kids can’t so much as go out into their own front yard without the world coming to a screeching halt.

The mother of these kids would not have been grateful. She told them she didn’t want them.

Sadly this situation may not have been rare back in those days. WV has always been hard scrabble and burdensome, much more so during the Depression and WWII. There are still “pockets” of poverty. Most beautiful state with mountains and trees, but not a lot of ways to make a living. Mostly wonderful, tough people.

This is way way different than that. These kids were told they were not wanted. When cops searched the parents home found meth making materials. I do hope Grandma loves them more than their worthless parents. These poor kids, at least they knew Grandma loved them.
