I would not vote in the ‘pub primary, if they had one, because I decline to rejoin the Republican party.

I'm very much a Trump supporter (and also a Savage fan). But Savage needs to read the Constitution and maybe James Caeser's Presidential Selection.

The Framers talked about APPOINTING not electing a Chief Executive. E.g. Federalist No 68 (Hamilton): "The mode of appointment of the chief magistrate of the United States ..."

The Constitution Art II Sec 1 Cl 2: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector." [And the Electors were to have the first opportunity to select the President.]

Fifteen States participated in the second presidential election. Legislators selected the electors in nine of those fifteen States. Only two States had direct election of electors. The others had convoluted rules for their selection.

Things have obviously evolved, which is why there can be a whole book about this. But there weren't always primaries, or even "Presidential elections." The Framers were not big on popular elections, maybe because they understood that people would just vote themselves goodies from the government. They were smart guys.

Savage's chirping about "Democracy" is beneath him. "The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter." (Winston Churchill)

In the system of government designed by the Framers, i.e. the system of government we're supposted to have, the President has practically no powers—relative to the powers that Current Occupant (and even his predecessor) have taken on. As my byline suggests, if the government has very little power, the people will be less concerned about the method by which the government is chosen.

But when the President takes on sweeping powers undreamed of by the Framers, to the point that he practically has the power of life-and-death over everything, then the people will be extremely concerned about who is running the government; and they will demand a say.

I certainly agree that things aren't like the Framers envisioned. The whole Federal Government, not just the President, was supposed to be of limited power. But it was old "Honest Abe" who changed all that, not Bush or Obama.

The quote from Churchill stands.

Only a foot or so to shovel this morning. Mostly melting during the day. Heavy stuff, though!
