It's GOD's way of keeping all of us Humble !
I have a brown thumb; it seems.
I got my land surveyed!!!! Finally!!!
Dearest Nephew came out yesterday and helped reinforce the survey stakes with steel posts. My field is now marked out well enough I can start plowing as soon as the weather is right.
Glad I got it surveyed, one of the corners was nowhere near where I thought it was! And the elderberries that I thought were about a foot onto the neighbor’s land? Nope, they’re all mine!!!
NOBODY has a "brown thumb", unless they purposely want one , or refuse to learn new techniques, or refuse to learn from others who offer information (for free).
As stated earlier in this thread, we have people who can only afford to have one pot on a window sill, all the way to a farmer with over 20 acres.
What we have in common is the desire to improve through education, and a willingness to better ourselves and others , through horticulture and plant education .
We are all equal here; although, some may have more experience than other participants (and we do have some 'Lurkers' who never contribute) but rather just observe.
And Lurkers are welcome too - but we'd all like to learn from their own "brown thumb" experiences too.
The choice is yours ; while we would welcome your participation, you have the ability to "lurk" - it's your choice . The choice is yours (free agency) !
DO you have a pot ? empty yogurt container ? or 20 acres?
Then join us ! ( What have you got to lose, other than a 'brown thumb ?)..LMAO !!!
Got Questions ? .. then ask away; we have people from Alaska to the Philippines, form Oregon to The keys in Florida !..every Friday PM with "greeneyes" as moderater.
Be prepared to cast a fine net over the elderberries before they ripen, and get stolen by the birds.
Ah ,!! THE RECIPIE !!(according to Walton's Mountain, TV show) was the gentile introduction for ladies into alcohol and 'home-brew' .
You lucky dog !
I make an elderberry syrup every year to ward off viruses. When the lot next to mine was bought I thought I’d lost my source.
Two years in a row, the rest of the household had gotten hammered with the flu. To the point where they can barely walk. Both years, I was exposed for several weeks before catching it, and mine was mild and quick. The elderberry syrup every day was the only difference.
I was unaware that elderberry had anti-viral medical properties
as here in Western NY, it grows wild , mostly in hedgerows, and abandoned farmland .
Truth told , it is propagated by the inadequate digestion of birds which fly elsewhere ,
and the seeds of which are then spread by encapsulated seeds, surrounded by fertilizer
It's sorta like a yogurt covered seed, which is surrounded by fertilizer.
See, this thread is so diverse that I failed to mention herbalists also frequent this gardening forum
and they have as much to offer as gardeners , farmers, and 'only one pot' gardening folk.
Do I feel stupid -> heck no ! I just learned another use for elderberries, other than purple droppings on a white pickup truck (mine).
The only other thing I need to learn is how to get to the ripened elderberries quicker than the birds.
We all have something to learn here...
Come visit , and grow ,..and learn...
Was your mother a hamster?
It got cold at my place Friday night.
Killed all of the blossoms on Mrs. Augie’s magnolia tree and froze the tops of the few potatoes that were peeking out. The peach and plum trees are all in post-bloom so I’m sure they took some damage as well.
We got a really nice rain last night. My patio was crawling with earthworms this morning when I went out feed the horses.
With the rain the morels won’t be far behind.
ACK! Our predicted 30-32 low last night dropped to an actual 24. There goes the early fruit!
That is why the earliest profession is farming , and not prostitution
The earliest farmers were gamblers to bring in the first crops of the season - sometimes you win and , sometimes you lose to frost.
Hopefully , the crop isn't ruined.
We used to be able to get Joe Bastardi's forecasts, especially for spring , when the temperatures fluctuate so much.
Bastardi had the uncanny ability to warn when weather and the jetstream was changing, and could isolate even where caution was advised.
Does anyone still have access to Bastardi's predictions - especially for spring time ?
