Trade group egged on FDA to act against vegan mayo

Mayonnaise impostors, beware! An industry group is patrolling the grocery aisles.

The Association for Dressings and Sauces, which was founded in 1926, repeatedly urged federal regulators last year to take action against an upstart vegan spread that it said was masquerading as mayonnaise, despite its lack of eggs, according to emails obtained by The Associated Press.

The Food and Drug Administration later sent a public warning to Hampton Creek about its “Just Mayo” spread, which triggered national headlines and ultimately led to the San Francisco startup and media darling tweaking its label.

The efforts provide a glimpse into the influence industry groups can wield behind the scenes, even if their names may be difficult to take seriously. The American Pizza Community, for instance, represents the interests of companies like Domino’s and Godfather’s Pizza. The National Confectioners Association promotes candy’s fun, carefree image on behalf of members like Hershey. …

Mayonnaise by definition can not be vegan.

Depends on what definition. For example, if the European Union was still on its kick about “protected” regional names of foods, it would have insisted that nothing could be called “Mayonnaise” that was not produced in Mahón, Menorca.

And that is why my spread is called “Veganese” and it is very tasty, however, now that we have chickens that are laying, I might have to try making my own mayo with olive oil sometime soon.

The Left can make up any PC word game they want, and snowflakes everywhere cheer while innocent people are destroyed by it.

But catch them in an outright lie, and they mock it as trivial.

Now, if they’d get around to requiring tomatoes to be the main ingredient in Catsup/Ketchup, instead of HFCS. At least bananas are the main ingredient in banana sauce.

Bought this stuff thinking it was real mayonnaise. You would think with the name “Just Mayo” you would think it would be what it says it is.

BTW it tastes terrible.

Why should they be allowed to misrepresent their product when others can’t, should the producers of real mayonaise be allowed to claim their product is vegan?

So make your own. It takes 30 seconds to blend and you can put whatever you want in it an call it mayo.

Of course there is. America is the biggest group of "joiners" in human history. Especially when it comes to protecting some kind of interest.

If I want mayo without eggs, I'll buy it, but I don't want it to be sold to me under as false label. I want my mayo to be made the original way.

I make my own Mayo :>)

Ingredients
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 whole eggs
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 cups vegetable oil

Directions
In the container of a food processor or blender, combine the mustard powder, salt, eggs and vinegar. Set the food processor on medium speed and gradually drizzle in the oil while it runs. Transfer to a container with a lid and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

(use a stick blender right into the container you’ll be using for the mayo)

BTW it tastes terrible.

In USENET's RFC, there was a big discussion on it last year, and how "Big Food", probably Kraft, was complaining about it.

Given that you just grabbed it because of the label, I'd say Big Food has a point in this case.

Tweaking the label isn't enough. They should just go with "Just Veganaise" or the like, and spend the marketing money and promote it as egg-free spread/sauce/dressing.

It does have its supporters, though.
