The folks responsible for the entries in the Associated Press Stylebook have announced that the word Internet will no longer be uppercased, thus breaking my heart and making some of our writers very happy.
The AP Stylebook, which many newspapers and websites (one word? really?) use to guide their style efforts, defines Internet as a decentralized, worldwide network of computers that can communicate with each other. Its a pretty big definition and has warranted the glory of a capital I. But no more. And thats not all. The AP Stylebook has also decided to lowercase Web.
The changes, which were not announced on April Fools Day, are to take effect on June 1 when the 2016 edition of the style guide is released. Then, and only then, will Internet join other inexplicable changes the style guide has made in the recent past, including more than versus over and underway versus under way, both of which still vex me.
At least it still thinks literally means literally and not figuratively.
The AP isn’t dead yet? Must be an active Zombie though...
Islamic terrorism will still be referred to as anything but.
Pinging dayglored and Shadow Ace for the passing of an era!
The latest Apple/Mac/iOS Pings can be found by searching Keyword "ApplePingList" on FreeRepublic's Search.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me
If they gonna go that far, let’s just call it the interwebz.
And just what is the associated press stylebook?
yay!
This was already done, in 1984, "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension", by a Lectoid Commander... at/near the end...
So what? Big deal
(I never cap'ed internet and forced programs to allow lowercase...)
All this really shows is how far AP has fallen.
A very, very long time ago, AP quite simply WAS the news, everybody in the newspaper business built their particular slice of that world on stories that came off that hallowed AP teletype and the surest sign of a genuine old-time newsie was he was the only guy in the Newsroom that wouldn’t jump or even put down his coffee(or ?) cup when that little bell started ringing.
Now, the only way AP can even get noticed is by playing spelling Czar.
....lower case instead of upper. Give me a f’ing break.
I call it Islamic Jihad.
Just another thing the rest of us can ignore...
: )
It's the holy q'ran of how news writers and reporters must write for the vast majority of newspapers. They set the style of news stories, what grammar to use, what words are forbidden to use, what is politically correct, what forms of address one must use, etc.
They revise it from time to time to reflect the general mores of the time. It dictates what general English in the Main Stream Media will be in written form. . . It includes what dirty words are not allowed and what will now be permitted. How one is to refer to the child growing in the womb, for example, as "fetus" and not a "foetus" and NEVER as a "pre-born baby" or "unborn infant". It also may require that that item growing in the womb be properly referred to as "an unviable tissue mass" if it's in the first trimester and the woman decides to abort. These are all fair-game for the stylebook.

JUST FOR THAT,I’M GONNA YELL AT YOU!
THAT'S OK... I REALLY LIKED YOUR WORK ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE MR MORRIS
And we are not supposed to say illegal aliens any longer. I’m sure there are other verboten words or statements as well. The AP standards are liberal so need to follow the liberal line.
I thought proper nouns were supposed to be capitalized.
They just want to be more up to date and hip.
In which case they should type it as: the 1nt3rn3t5
lolrofl!!!!!!111!!!!11!!
Well said.
