No Self-Respecting Adult should Buy Comics or Watch Superhero Movies
The Telegraph ^ | March 28, 2016 | Rhymer Rigby

Another month, another superhero movie staggers to the silver screen, lurching under the weight of its own self-importance, groaning with the expectations of fans, and burdened with a nine-figure marketing budget. I am, of course, talking about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, to give it its full, clunkingly portentous title.

Can we all please grow up? Can we acknowledge that Marvel and DC have scraped right though the bottom of the barrel? Can we call time on superhero films? Films which are too dark for kids the comics were originally written for, yet too dumb for any thinking adult.

Terrorist/refugee crises; heated elections; North Korea; PC correctness - the list goes on.

I wondered about this recently. With so much going on, our society has meanwhile retreated into escapism. (I place STAR WARS in this same category.)

Films which are too dark for kids the comics were originally written for …
Looks like the author is unfamiliar with the subject matter of the original comics.

As for escapism, that is not uncommon during times of economic uncertainty. The movie theaters were not unprofitable during the Depression.

Spare me. Captain America: The Winter Soldier touched on security versus liberty issues very solidly. Better than most of the dreck from Hollywood.

I’m tired of them myself.

Just a symptom of Hollywood having no originality anymore.

The author must not be much of a comic-book fan, or they’d know that the comic books are often fairly dark themselves.

And World War II followed. People need to wake up.

I like comic book movies generally. But lately, the trend has been to make them dark.

I think it worked for the first Batman (with Christian Bale), and the second (mainly because of Heath Ledger’s Joker). But I didn’t care for a darker Spider Man. And I don’t care for Emo Superman.

Not interested in Hard-R Deadpool.

Not interested in seeing Batman v Superman. Reviews say it has no joy.

“Ant Man” was a lot of fun. Second only to “Guardians of the Galaxy”. I truly enjoyed both of them.

I only watch Zatoichi films.

They quit making those when old Shintaro Katsu died, back in the 90s.

Well, I might watch a Clint Eastwood from time to time :)

After Green Lantern I must have found my "self respect" and swore off any more sci-fi but kind of broke down with Star Wars, to my regret.
No plans to see Dawn of Justice...yet

I grew up in the 60s when Marvel Comics just started and were light years better than DC. However IMNSHO The Dark Knight is not only the best comic book movie ever, it’s one of the best movies ever.

DC has certainly shot themselves in the foot.

But I think it was Marvel who killed off the genre.

There are only so many superheroes with box office appeal: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and maybe there's room for one or two more.

Marvel tried to shove too many comic book movies down people's throats.

Now DC is trying to do the same thing. They don't get that when these movies are as common as dirt they'll be just as palatable as dirt.

I rolled my eyes when my kids first got into the Marvel superhero movies...until I watched Captain America. The upcoming “Civil War” movie has prompted many rich discussions. The girls all say they would side with Captain America and individual freedom, the boys (teenagers) love the snarky Tony Stark so they are undecided. I’m amazed they are making any of these when the government really is talking away our freedoms.

They have no desire to see Batman vs Superman as it seems to be lame.

Comic books played a big part in the war helping to sell war bonds.

They weren’t saturated with comic book supermen back then. But of course, escapism in general has the problem of numbing people to dangerous realities.
