A suburban New Orleans court discriminates against Latinos by charging them for inadequate English interpreters and making them attend overpriced, ineffective English classes as a condition of probation, the Southern Poverty Law Center said Wednesday in a letter to the U.S. Justice Department.

The SPLC complaint centers on practices in 1st Parish Court of Jefferson Parish, which handles traffic and misdemeanor cases. The complaint cites the experience of four people with limited English speaking abilities who said interpreters rushed them through proceedings and failed to adequately explain their cases. …

They don’t like English, they can go home to Mexico and speak all the Spanish they want without issue

Well, they can offer them a choice. Either pay for the interpreters and take the classes OR PROVE they are in this country LEGALLY and be deported. That is the way I’d handle it.

You need to have some basic understanding of English in order to be a safe driver in the US. Traffic signs, warnings, everything is in English.

Everyone in the SPLC is just as much of a traitor as the Rosenbergs were.

I just had an incident the other day entering a one lane bridge that had an alternate merge sign clearly displayed at the entrance. Two woman in the car just about crashed into me if I didn’t slam on my brakes. I blew my horn and they look at me like I’m crazy! It was obvious to me that they didn’t understand English because the sign is there for all to see. You are absolutely right that their refusal to learn even the most basic levels of English cause them to be a dangerous hazard on the road.

How can one live in a society, watch TV, see billboards and newspapers and not learn the language by osmosis? A week in Puerto Vallarta 30 years ago and we could communicate pretty well in their lingo.

They live in Spanish-speaking neighborhoods, read Spanish newspapers, watch Spanish TV channels. If we eliminated the accommodations, then they might have an incentive to learn.

My wife’s cousin came from Cuba a few years ago. When they arrived, their kids couldn’t speak a word of English. Fast forward to today, they speak English fluently.

By making a conscious effort to resist learning it, by thinking your culture was superior and that you had no need to assimilate into an inferior culture because your group should be in charge or, in rarer cases, being too elderly to do so.

Even my mother, who made her first visit to Japan when our youngest daughter was born, learned a little of the local lingo at age 67.

Had to look it up. That's what I love about FR, the comments such as "just like so-and-so", then I get to learn.

I heard some time ago Bernard on Imus in the morning ask what a Hispanic youth and a billiard ball have in common.

The harder you hit them the more English you get.

Yeah. Too bad none of them say, “Mexicans - please do not get snot faced drunk and kill US citizens on their own highways.”

I use the Rosenberg example a lot as an example of what we used to do to Leftists who deliberately sabotage our country. The modern day Leftists, to name just one of their many crimes, sell state secrets to Islam, yet they are not even given slaps on the wrist! Failure to punish Leftism is what has led us to the rut we’re in.
