Editors Note: Natalie Morales Op-Ed was written before President Obama announced his intention to travel to Cuba and is not in any way intended to be a response to the presidents remarks.
Just last week, I was at my friend Michaelas house dropping off a bag of stuff Im sending to my family in Cuba. Her husband, Fred, is visiting Havana and was kind enough to be my courier. Among the things I sent with Fred were two packages of Cuban coffee. Yes, thats right: Im sending Cuban coffee to Cuba. Its absurd and hilarious and I got a real kick out of telling everyone I came across that day about it. This is because Cuban coffee is too expensive for the average Cuban to buy in Cuba. So they make doCubans always make doreusing old coffee or grinding in some split peas if they have to get their fix. I, on the other hand, buy it for three bucks at Target.
Coffee is just one of the things my family in the States sends to my family in Cuba. Usually, monthly, we send money, medicine or syringes for the diabetic aunt (since the hospital doesnt have any unused disposable ones), baby clothes, adult clothes, shoes, or food (theres a website for Americans to buy food that is sent to Cuba, but at an absurd upcharge). They cannot survive without our help. For many Cuban-American families all over the States, this is just a regular part of life, another bill to pay each month.

Hint to the clueless: A Sandals Resort is NOT Cuba.
Stupid lefties like this would have gone to Thereisienstadt during WWII and come back saying, “What are these Jews complaining about?”
But...but...Cuban health care!!!
There’s also a distinct element of “keep the picturesque natives from being spoiled by Western culture” in this that would have made a Victorian British colonialist blush. Cuba won’t be “spoiled” by prosperity but they’re going to have to hang a few Communists from lampposts first. Now for that I would happily tour the place.
I had an older friend named John Bos who survived Thereisienstadt and I imagine he would agree with you.
Funny how nobody says the same thing about Africa.
Please Stop Saying You Want to Go to Cuba Before Its Ruined
I’ve heard this sentiment expressed quite a bit. There’s some liberal romanticized notion that Cuba is an unspoiled tropical paradise. That when Hilton Hotels and Starbucks and McDonald’s and all the rest arrive, that their notion of paradise will be ruined.
I’ve heard some old car enthusiasts want to go to Cuba now that travel restrictions are easing up. But I think those car enthusiasts will be disappointed. These car people are the ones who meticulously maintain their 1950s era cars, and will be shocked to see that the old cars in Cuba are rusting hulks, with rebuilt engines and mismatched spare parts holding them together. Hard to imagine that these old cars in terrible condition will attract tourists. I’m not a car person, so maybe just am missing the appeal of all the old cars in bad condition.
And maybe some of these liberal dreamer types really are into communism, and think that the injections of capitalism and American investment in Cuba will ruin the worker’s paradise.
Why won’t any liberal accept my offer of a free one way plane flight to the socialist paradise of Cuba?
I will buy them a ticket to Cuba, provided they destroy their US passport and citizenship papers and renounce their citizenship before they get on the plane.
Yes, most unfortunately got their views of Pre-Castro Cuba from watching Godfather II.
My husband’s coworker just spent time in Cuba at one of the better hotels, with no toilet seat.
The only reason I’d go to Cuba is to see the actual hanging of commies from lamp posts.
What an awesome/interesting time in history that will be.
I just wanna fish for largemouth bass there. They are considered an invasive species and fishing from the bank, some Canadians have caught world record hawgs. No boats (john boats with electric motors) are allowed because the people MIGHT steal them and head for Miami.
And thanks to Michael Moore, most Libs think Cuba is Healthcare paradise. I would be happy to see them all go to Cuba for their healthcare.....SOON!
I’ve never understood how it is that Cuba has supposedly suffered so much because of our trade embargo.
If communism is the superior system to organize your economy and structure society, and if America and capitalism oppresses people and all that, then why would a worker’s paradise such as Cuba need American trade and American investment to prosper?? If communism is so superior, why the need for evil capitalist investment to help their economy??
I think it is a lot like you said - to many of these leftists Cuba represents an ideal system in a tropical paradise. They imagine themselves as some sort of functionary high up in the communist system - probably living in a mansion. They sure don’t imagine themselves living like an average person in a communist country - these leftists flatter themselves that they are so special and so entitled that in a communist system of course they would be on top.
Good article.
Are you talking about the author? She wasn’t saying anything good about communism. Maybe you didn’t read it.
Sorry, I didn’t mean the author. I was talking about the kind of people that say they want to see Cuba before it’s ruined.
***Theres some liberal romanticized notion that Cuba is an unspoiled tropical paradise.***
Back in the 1960s, 70s and 80s it was popular for American students to travel to Cuba and work the sugar cane harvest.
They all came back with glowing reports on how great Cuba is!
Did I mention they ALL came back to the USA! None stayed in Cuba.
