Under state rules, the first two years of promise zones must be funded through philanthropy. Beginning in 2018, the Detroit Promise will be funded by increases in property tax revenue based on the 6 mills of the State Education Tax; the program will capture half of any increase in property tax revenue from the SET, officials said.
Detroit Public Schools interim superintendent Alycia Meriweather told students gathered at a news conference that its now up to them to be prepared for college, by getting good grades.
You have an opportunity today that all the rest of us who grew up in Detroit didnt have, Meriweather said. I want to really encourage you to do everything in your power to get ready to receive that opportunity.

If you're like me, a very boring and not diverse at all Scotsman living in the US-- no one has ever given you anything at all. That must be nice. At the very least someone could hand me a sandwich.
Free for who? Certainly not the ones paying for it.
Are there T shirts?
There must be T shirts!
Who is on the T shirt?
That which becomes free will soon have a similar value accordingly
Free stuff is never of value
Yeah, because Detroit has so much money..
They cant pay for the schools they have but they have money to pay for college. I would have to say stay away from a business degree there.
Plank #1 of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto - Abolition of private property rights.
The way Lieberals implement it via high property taxes, restrictive zoning laws, “fair housing” edicts, environmental and “wetlands” regulations, UN Agenda 21, etc.
As a native Detroiter, pre-1967 Riot, this is going to work so well. Most current DPS high school students cannot read, write, or calculate beyond the eight grade level. Going to a two year college without the necessary educational foundation is a recipe for failure.
Was this decided by referendum? It sure seems unconstitutional to me if it wasn’t.
oh, I’m pretty sure it’s a recipe for failure
The DEMOCRAT CORRUPTORATS are in charge again in Detroit.
Counting down to its next Municipal Bankruptcy in 3...

They will not learn. Detroit will be a ghost city a few years after implementation as everyone will move out to avoid additional taxes.
To be fair, their are a number of great Community Colleges in the greater metro Detroit area. In fact, they can go to school for a lot less than the car that takes them to the school. The rub is again the cost shift via taxes....
The United Auto Workers Union has provided the employment situation that allows these luxury homes to be owned by Detroit working class Americans.
It is only fitting that these beneficiaries of Union policy pay forward their fair share of the largess bequeathed upon them by caring Socialist Democrats.
And made community college insignificant.
***Free for who? Certainly not the ones paying for it.***
Hahahaha, exactly! But don’t try to confuse them with facts. Their state educated brains won’t be able to handle it.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Detroit is...
Bankrupt
Decaying
Dangerous
Corrupt
Devoid of working human beings
The property taxes they can actually collect might send one student to college, if they save up for a few years...
All those mandatory “square filler” classes for an AA degree can be accomplished more economically there, and most community colleges also offer some BAs.
Higher Education is very big business, and even more so nowadays, since the Feds have taken over the entire funding mechanism system, absent Community Colleges, since 2010.
I'm a boring, technically “diverse” USA citizen, and I did not take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded me by local community colleges, but I do not begrudge those who are/were smart enough to do so.
I applaud them!
It might take a few years longer to get that piece of paper they pursue for their own personal career goals, but they generally manage to either graduate or fail, absent the heavy debts of high priced State or private colleges.
And just as a personal observation, they do it without acquiring the weird leftist brain washing.
What’s the dropout rate in Detroit? Free for who is right.
Ha, ha, ha, ha ,ha. Everyday here in Detroit they play ads offering amnesty for the vast number of people who have not paid their property taxes. Is this a spend before you have the money program? They have no money.
