Carnival will make the first cruise from the US to Cuba in more than 50 years after it agreed a deal with the Cuban government. The cruise line will send its 704-passenger MV Adonia to Cuba through its new brand Fathom starting on May 1. Carnival, in hailing its 'historic inaugural sailing', said it will be the first cruise line to sail that itinerary.

Can they stay there, so we can be rid of around 1,700 of them?

I can imagine that there might be an equal number of classic car collectors with suitcases full of cash.

1972 – Maiden voyage of Carnival’s first ship, the TSS Mardi Gras, which runs aground on sandbar outside the Port of Miami

history of Carnival cruise lines

My math says Carnival hasn't been running anywhere for 50 years. Or is that another badly written headline?

I'd imagine some of the craftsmen there could make them almost any car from the 50s from scratch.

Damn American tourist, gonna spoil the grand old way of life on Cuba.

...pollute the water, air & culture.

Worse, they stop at every Che poster or drawing for a selfie.

A couple of years ago, I watched a German documentary piece on the Carnival crowd. They had staked out some small port on the Dominican Republic and a boat would said in and off-load people at this fake upscale VIP landing area. It was totally fenced off and armed guards patrolling the perimeter. Outside of the fence? It was a third-world area....massive unemployment...and marginal conditions. As long as you stayed within the fence....you felt like a million bucks. So it was a fake gimmick that people liked and paid for.

I think the Cuban experience will be the same. Some bus will pull up and pick up the Carnival crowd....taking them to some fake upscale street with forty shops and a dozen coffee houses/pubs/restaurants. Some song and dance routine will occur, and after six hours along this controlled street area....they will be hustled back to the boat and talk for months and months over the fabulous “Che-Castro” street that they visited....all fake.

how long before tourists end up being arrested on trumped up charges?
remember this is a very restrictive regime that does not tolerate anybody not toe-ing the line

I’ve been wondering that too. Obama is implying it is a safe, normal place to visit.

A friendly warning to anyone that may want to boycot carnival. They are but one of several lines that come under the P&O shipping. Princess and others belong to them.

I’ve known (white) people who traveled freely around Cuba outside resort areas as recently as last year. Cuba is extremely hard on criminals who bother tourists.

However, everyone agrees that you need automatic weapons to venture around DR beyond the resort walls. Basically lawless

Does the term "Potemkin Village" ring a bell?

A pretentiously showy or imposing façade intended to mask or divert attention from an embarrassing or shabby fact or condition. Origin of Potemkin village Expand. 1935-1940. 1935-40; after Prince Potëmkin, who allegedly had villages of cardboard constructed for Catherine II's visit to the Ukraine and the Crimea in 1787.

Yep, bad headline. 50 years for any cruise ship/line I think.

Well, yeah, these Carnival “Potemkins” are what you describe, but hey...people are willing to pay $1,500 for seven days on a floating vessels that seems to land at idealistic paradise places, and offers up buffet dinners and cheap booze....so what’s the big deal?

I’m waiting for Disney to wake up and build five or six different fake islands (with Chinese help) where you have an entire day in some fraudulent landscape, and feel really good about friendly fake natives or fake cowboys or fake native women in revealing clothing.
