Northeast Could Get Foot of Snow on First Day of Spring

If you live in the Northeast, the first day of spring definitely won't be the first spring day — not with a Nor'easter brewing that could bury New York and other major cities under as much as a foot of snow this weekend.

Forecasters said Thursday it's still too early to know for sure, but yet another polar vortex is looking more likely to leave significant accumulations Sunday and Monday from Philadelphia to Boston.

It will certainly be colder — as much as 30 degrees colder by the time a low-pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico pushes warm, moist air over the Northeast on Sunday, creating a proper Nor'easter and "laying down the foundation for a potential winter storm" on the first day of spring, the National Weather Service said.

"You might be wearing short sleeves today, but by the time that cold air settles in, you won't be wearing them Monday," said Kait Parker, a meteorologist for The Weather Channel.

Preliminary forecasts suggested that New York City and Hartford, Connecticut, could get 8 to 12 inches of snow, with 5 to 8 inches falling north to Boston and south to Philadelphia.

I don’t live in the Northeast but I was shocked this morning to see snow on the ground after weeks of 40-50 degree temperatures and no snow. I’m in SE Wisconsin.

Those snowstorms after early March aren’t even minor inconveniences, as long as folks are smart enough to stay off the roads and let the plowing get done. They melt.

The weather pukes up here are predicting huge amounts of snow because of the three computer models they use, two show tracks that would produce 12-14 inches. The third shows a track that gives us less than 3". A 2/3 majority wins.

Whatever happened to real meteorologists?

That’s for damned sure. My wife is from Oregon. She is ready to plant flowers the first weekend it gets above 60 degrees here in southeastern PA. I told her I’ve seen it snow in April. She didn’t believe me until her petunias were buried by a mid-April snow storm.

Thanks for posting. I’m taking 15 young men camping this weekend. I just alerted them to be ready for snow camp.

6 years ago, I was enjoying a nice last day of winter working in the year while watching my kids ride their bikes up and down the street … wearing t-shirts and shorts.

The next day, we woke up to a foot of snow on the ground … first day of Spring.

This was in Texas.
