Longtime fans have speculated for years, but a producer of the upcoming Xena: Warrior Princess reboot has confirmed: Xena is gay in the new series.
In a post on Tumblr, the reboots screenwriter and executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach confirmed that Xena (played in the 90s by Lucy Lawless) would finally fully explore the not-so-subtle lesbian relationship she had with her sidekick Gabrielle (played in the original series by Renee OConnor).
[T]here is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s, Grillo-Marxuach wrote. [I]t will also express my view of the world which is only further informed by what is happening right now and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.
The original series, which ran for six seasons between 1995 and 2001, featured plenty of tender moments between its two female co-leads.
In a 2003 interview with Lesbian News, Lawless said that despite never having been explicitly mentioned on the show, her character was definitely gay, and the series final scene was proof.
There was always a Well, she might be or she might not be but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very final scene, that cemented it for me, Lawless said then. Now it wasnt just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled around sometimes, it was Nope, theyre married, man.
Grillo-Marxuachs Tumblr post came in response to a fan who had asked whether the lesbian character on one of the producers other TV shows, The 100, had influenced the writing process on Xena.

Well, of course, she is. You’re just not cool unless you’re gay.
Ack, seems I’m never going to be in the IN group.
I'm so disappointed in this news. I was sure that a high-testosterone shemale such as Xena was "in transition." Xena? A Cis-sy? Zhe it aint Zho!
Jabba the Hutt meets Mad Max! Auuugh!
Why the need to inject homosexuality into the story??
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?
The New America. All gay, all the time.
What fan base? Maybe a few children liked the show, but most of the adult viewers probably had some sexual angle in mind.
It's not like Hollywood took over some old story or comic book. Xena and Gabrielle were created for television.
Nah, for Highlander they only switch nationalities. Get a Russian dude to play the Scotsman this time and we’ll have the Scotman play an aborigine or something :)
I dunno, I figure Xena’s fan base mostly already thought (or hoped) that she was a lesbian, so I don’t think it will hurt them much. She was pretty much “lesbian Hercules”, there wasn’t any other reason for the show...
“will the fan base still watch when they turn them into two hard core Hillary style lesbos?”
That is the fan base.
That’s why they are making it explicit.
Mmmm. Hudson Leick.
Because it's so important that 1% of our population that is mentally ill should be portrayed as "Heroic."
I have feeling perhaps original Xena was bi sexual she did have relationship with Hercules in first season of Hercules
There is slash fan fiction featuring Xena and little friend Gabrielle
So, can Gabrielle save Holland when she sticks her finger in the Dyke?
Nah, Donald has Daisy Duck, so he’s straight.
It’s Goofy and Pluto that have something unseemly going on I suspect...
Speaking of Highlander they going remake that soon somebody bought the contract up they option for one of the studios
Why does every show these days have to be about "relationships"? Only girls and gays want to see that.
My wife cannot understand my love for that movie.
It’s a shame they can’t show two women who are unrelated but close like sisters without it being gay. I’ve heard young people talking about war movies where a man risks his life for a friend as being gay. They have to take every relationship and twist it to fit their agenda.
I never watched Xena. I thought O’Connor was super cute, and Lawless has yet to lose her hotness no matter her age. But, she seems to always play a bisexual/lesbian. She was bi in Spartacus, and probably full lesbian in Ash vs. Evil Dead.
