Should McDonald's be responsible for how its franchises treat workers?
cbs news ^ | 3-11-2016 | KATE GIBSON

In a case currently before the National Labor Relations Board, an administrative law judge will rule whether McDonald's Corp. (MCD) is a joint-employer of the tens of thousands of workers employed by the company's franchisees. Such a determination could make the fast-food giant, the largest restaurant chain in the world, culpable for alleged violations of labor law at some of its franchised outlets.

The ruling also could raise pressure on McDonald's to boost wages and accept more responsibility for working conditions at franchisees. In addition, it could give firepower to unions and other other labor groups pressing for change in the restaurant, health care and other industries where franchising is common.

absolutely

If they value their reputation and they can't control their franchisers, don't franchise.

Attempting to create a deeper pocket situation to target. In no way should the master franchise (Corp.) be held for any action of a franchise owning (corp).

Yes. There’s a fairly massive rulebook for how to run a McDs (or any other franchise operation). It sets all kinds of things from what vendors to use for equipment to pay scales for job titles. Then there’s the bi-annual visit to make sure the store is being run up to snuff. And the constant threat of corporate taking over the store. So yes, they very much ARE responsible for how the franchises treat the workers. Those franchises are either following the rulebook, or risking having their franchise taken away.

It’s sad to see so many of those jobs are the available ones. Is there a solution to the fact that not-so-young-adults are doing those jobs. See my tax plan.

What ever happened to “if you don’t like it you can leave?”
Gawd, Big Gov wants to put their little Commissars in charge of everything!
But then Commissars were the first “political” franchises making sure, with the life and death authority of the state, folks did what they was told.

I wonder if some Democrats didn't get a big enough donor contribution?

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is an independent agency of the United States government charged with conducting elections for labor union representation and with investigating and remedying unfair labor practices.

Formed July 5, 1935
Jurisdiction Federal government of the United States
Headquarters Washington, D.C.
Employees 1,628 (2008)
Parent agency Executive Office of the President

the NLRB is a Depression-era vestige. Its a bunch of ideological hammers just looking for nails to pound.

It was created by executive order of Roosevelt, so I don’t see why it can’t be eliminated just as easily.

Gawd, Big Gov wants to put their little Commissars in charge of everything!

They have to hire dimwits to keep the real unemployment numbers from becoming obvious to the low-information voters.

Then they have to find something for the dimwits to do.

Do dead flora and fauna go there to be consumed by humans?
It’s a restaurant, and better than some with more than a dozen items on the menu.
