I recently got a TiVo Bolt - records 4 channels at a time.

It also has a skip commercials feature from many channels. For those without the skip feature, one can advance 30 seconds at a time at the press of a button.

Most times, I record programs and watch them later, so I can skip or advance through the commercials.

I noticed that trend a few years ago on TV, moving from one show to another without a break. No big title intros anymore, like back in the 60s; think “Bonanza” or “The Fugitive.”

We’re paying more than $100 a month for television. We’re about to dump it. (The contract just expired)

For $100 a month we can get plenty of entertainment off the net - so even the price is a wash.

What annoys me is the shear repetition - do businesses really think watching the same commercial every fifteen minutes is a good selling technique?

“...do businesses really think watching the same commercial every fifteen minutes is a good selling technique?”

On the TV show “Better Call Saul” the lawyer makes his own T.V. ad with the help of two junior college film students. It is to have senior citizens at a certain group home call his firm.

“Okay - lunch is from 12:30 to 1:30, with Bingo for an hour after that. Then free-time until 4pm. “Murder she Wrote” comes on at 3, and 95% of the residents will be tuned in. The first 15 minutes - oh no - another murder in Cabot Cove! Who could it be? We’ll play the ad once - in the first commercial break!”

I thought it was very interesting from a “Know your customer” point of view.

Exactly. I reported the results of the Republican caucus
in Handcock county, Maine yesterday-about 30 minutes after the unofficial results were announced. We can all do that!

That ain’t the half of it.

The official podcast is just a tick over 1 hr 30 min (even they cut out the tiresome spoken word ads for various snake oils).

An audio editing program can find and eliminate silences of which therre are many due to Rush’s frequent pregnant pauses and his constant futzing with the very audible and loud [but not to him] printer. This knocks the show down to 1 hr 15 min or even less.

Try watching the “Big Bang Theory” show. It must be greater then 30%
I saw a repeat yesterday about Howard telling his father in law about an upcoming space mission and the wedding conflicting and the father in law makes a comment that is a setup for a punchline and the punchline was edited out. “But she was nuts, so in a way”

Was it for more commercial time or someone in a sub basement emailed a complaint? TV Land edits the heck out of series like Gilligans Island with whole sections gone like the ending of the episode!

Mr. Rostenkowski: Walnut?
Howard: No, thank you. I’m allergic.
Mr. Rostenkowski: Oh, sure. My partner used to have that. He’s dead now.
Howard: From nuts?
Mr. Rostenkowski: Nah, his wife shot him. But she was nuts, so in a way.

Good catch there. I remember that dialog now. And I’ll bet it was a PC concern about shooting that caused the editing. But this would have passed:

Howard: From nuts?
Mr. Rostenkowski: Nah, his wife shot him. But she was nuts for Trump, so in a way.

"This is why I never watch a TV show directly. I DVR and then skip over commercials."

For SOME shows and movies on cable, they've ELIMINATED the DVR fast-forward option.

I was watching "How To Train Your Dragon" the other day with my son, and this feature was engaged.

Let me say: Grrrr....

And the commercials which we couldn't FF through were all the same. For the same car.

Over and over again.

Do they really think that kids are looking to buy a car?

It ruins the viewing experience.

For network trash, I suspect it's even less. You're "lucky" (a term I use loosely) to get 40 minutes out of those garbage merchants.

But 40 minutes worth of nauseating, stomach-churning pablum is probably more than enough anyway.

Back in the 1960’s there was an enormous battle over this issue before the FCC that went on for years, with the FCC threatening local station owners over the practice. As the statistics show, the good guys eventually lost in the world of national syndication.

I can live with commercials...We just DVR the few series/programs we do watch and fast forward thru the sales pitches...It is “commercial” TV after all...

What does get my goat is the dialogue being constantly drowned out by the inane noise added for dramatic value, I suppose, that seems to pass for background “music” and so loud the actors/narrators’ voices are lost...

What’s the point of informational programming if the sound “information” is buried by noise?

Just gettin’ cranky in my old age, I guess...

Get a DVR and watch later.

WTF is a “commercial”?
