The chart doesn’t take into account the monies that I accumulated only to lode to x-wives, dot-com busts, and dhimmicrat tax schemes.

Well you seem to believe the government is more innocent then I do. Remember the major problems don’t start for 20 years. I think by then they will say “tax the Roth” even though they have been taxed already. I think taxes will be at least 50 percent by then. Before the country completely falls apart they are going to take as much money from people they can first.

I doubt I’ll still be here in twenty years, so whether I trust the government or not is mostly immaterial.

Depressing......I hope you are. Of course who knows if I will be here in 20 years. I will be 66 in 20 years, but you never know.

Have a great weekend.

"Probably a significant number are going backwards on retirement savings as well."

You are right. There are many charts at the link and all show savings amounts on a steep downtrend during the 0bama years. Eight years more could crash everyone to zero savings, which must be what dear leader seems to HOPE to CHANGE.

My understanding of these reports is that they don’t take social security into account, nor pensions. And that under-reports what a lot of older people take into account for retirement.

Why would people who live off welfare save for tetirement?

that's the beauty of FDRs SSI scheme. Creat a permanent class of dependents and the associated political power that brings in a democratic system. Hell, even Freepers will tell you they've 'earned' their SSI handouts....

“The chart doesn’t take into account the monies that I accumulated only to lode to x-wives, dot-com busts, and dhimmicrat tax schemes.”

Sure it does, it’s reflected in the abysmal savings amounts. The losses are reflected in your present value.

Medical costs can run a retirement account dry as well.

If one so chooses. The decision to consume one's savings in the furtherance of their own life is individual, as are the consequences. I have no illusions about eternal life in this realm, and intend to bequeath what I can toward a better life for my own, than to squander what I build over a lifetime on the lasts gasps of this life.

And Social Security insolvency keeps changing, but may only be 4 years out from the last data I remember. Most who have pensions are .gov workers anymore. I never had one in all my years of working. And these pensions are mostly underfunded by trillions of dollars. Who is going to get shafted, the lazy government worker or the worker keeping their company running?

I’m 64, single, my daughter, her hubby and my 2 grandkids live with me. I put my son in law thru college. They will likely be with me a couple more years. The house is big and they’re all pretty good.

I have a great job, plenty in savings, a good 401K plan, but the way I feel, I may not retire until past 70.

I agree. With most new jobs being part time how can those people save?

By living beneath their means. Crazy, I know....

Spoilsport ;’}

OK, it doesn’t reflect all the money I made, saved, and then gave away (to people who didn’t deserve any of it). But that’s alright, I never expected a participation trophy.

I have never been able to put back what I should for retirement - need it to live on.

By definition, saving means living below one's means. Good luck with that if you are living paycheck to paycheck or worse.

Americans want fatter take-home pay! That should be the foundation of the Republican platform in 2016.

It requires economic growth. The message should be about how the GOP will create the conditions for growth and opportunity for all Americans.
