GOP debate fact-check: Exaggerations about trade, campaign donations and 9/11 'wives'
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | 3-4-2016 | Glenn Kessler and Michelle Ye Hee Lee / Washington Post

Trump got only one of these numbers right - the merchandise trade deficit with Mexico was $58 billion in 2015. For China it was $366 billion and Japan $69 billion, according to the International Trade Commission.

But Trump greatly overstates the case when he claims the United States is getting “absolutely crushed” in trade with “every other country.” There’s barely a trade deficit with Britain, and the United States has a trade surplus with Hong Kong ($30 billion), the Netherlands ($24 billion), the United Arab Emirates ($21 billion) Belgium ($15 billion), Australia ($14 billion), Singapore ($10 billion) and Brazil ($4 billion), among others.

...

This is the first time that Trump has said that his repeated claim that he would save $300 billion on prescription drugs in Medicare actually was supposed to mean negotiating for a range of products in the Medicare system. As we have noted previously, his earlier statements made no sense because total spending in Medicare Part D (prescription drugs) in 2014 was $78 billion.

But the $300 billion pledge doesn’t make much sense either. Projected Medicare spending in 2016 is $560 billion, so Trump unrealistically is claiming he will cut spending nearly 55 percent.

...

Cruz continues to say that Trump financed the Gang of Eight. But this is misleading. The majority of Trump’s giving was done long before the 2013 Gang of Eight’s support for comprehensive immigration reform.

...

Trump once again repeats a falsehood that previously earned him Four Pinocchios. The most exhaustive report on the 19 hijackers and their actions prior to the attack is the 9/11 Commission report. There is no support for Trump’s claims, as the report states that virtually all of the hijackers were unmarried.

I don’t remember Trump mentioning the UAR, Belgium, England or any of the others listed to pump up the authors anti-Trump position. I DO remember Trump mentioning over and over, China, Japan, Mexico and lately Vietnam. In Three of those four we are losing badly. Three of those four are where the concerns are. Trying to call Trump a liar is the point of the article, not the actual FACT that we have a MULTI BiLLioN DoLLAR TRADE DEFICIT especially with those countries Trump named.

That really graspign at straws "fact check. You found 7 that doe not even equal the imbalance with China alone The U.S. trade deficit with China was $365.7 billion in 2015 This is a new record, up slightly from last year's record of $343 billion. The trade deficit exists because U.S. exports to China were only $116.2 billion while imports from China hit a new record of $481.9 billion.5 days ago

I think they would count in “The rest”.
It’s easy to excuse things when it’s all painted with broad strokes. That’s one of the reasons Donnie rarely ever talks specifics.

Walter (E) Williams makes a good point about the trade deficit. He notes that he has a major trade deficit with his local grocery store. He spends a lot there, and they spend nothing with him. He then notes that he has an net trade surplus. The money he receives from all sources exceeds all the money he spends.

His point is that a trade deficit with a single nation is not critical, and must be considered along with all other trade transactions. This is particularly true in todays global economy.

Anyone who doesn’t believe the ChiComs have robbed us blind is an idiot. Economically and militarily. Clinton signed off on the tool and die equipment to produce miniaturization, for cry eyed-which is the REAL reason he is a traitor to the nth degree. Benedict Arnold was a close second.

Sorry but I don’t agree. I have seen too much destruction due to trade deficits, not only here, but in other countries as well.

The grocrry store story has no similarity to the international trade picture. Try something less childish.

You tell your Doctor Williams that the American Economy is not about a few cans of tomatoes and boxes of frozen peas. It is about the BIG PICTURE. Time to bring our jobs home, give OUR workforce the jobs they deserve and let OUR producers become OUR consumers and build OUR Economy back to where it used to be when our bridges were new and our streets were not full of potholes.
