Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit gets his own 50p coin – and he didn't have to steal it

The Royal Mint has chosen Beatrix Potter’s thieving Peter Rabbit as the first character from children’s literature ever to appear on a UK coin.

Peter, pictured in the blue jacket that he is forced to abandon in the garden of Mr McGregor when he is caught stealing vegetables, is captured on a special, coloured edition of a 50p coin available from today. The Royal Mint, which described Peter as “the most recognisable of Potter’s creations, and one of the most cherished from children’s literature”, will release uncoloured versions of the coin in change later this year.

This was largely my childhood. A much more innocent Age, for children anyway.

” A much more innocent Age”

Yep nowadays, with teaching kindergarteners to appreciate gays and the need for condoms, the cartoon of the day should be called “Peter Rottentail”.

So true. A library in SF has arranged for a drag queen to read children’s stories to kids this month.

You are not kidding.

When I was a kid, we sat mesmerized by the beautifully-illustrated books from Chris Van Allsburg when our teacher read them to us. I personally loved those and books by Richard Scarry that promoted hard work, family, and civic pride and were just fun to look at.

These days you see ever more books on Amazon with lazy illustrations about little boys wearing dresses being sold as “children’s literature”.

Makes you want to scream!

Well, rabbits are renowned for, ahem, multiplication, even if they do fail at higher mathematics.

No they have more protection now. growing up with trigger warnings and safe places.

For the young and heartless, here is Miss Potter's illustration of Mrs MacGregor and Peter's father
