Bill Clinton initiated a phone call to Donald Trump mere weeks before Trump tossed his hat into the ring, telling Trump that he should take a more prominent role within the Republican party because he was tapping into a vein of frustration among GOP voters.
Why would Bill Clinton tell that to Donald Trump, knowing that his wife would be running for the nomination under the Democratic Party banner and against the GOP nominee?

Because Bill would say anything to keep Trump from running as a Democrat against Hillary. He knew that Trump would easily beat Hillary whereas with someone like Bernie Sanders, she has a chance.
