Lands’ End Stores Donating Proceeds to Abortion Activist Gloria Steinem’s Organization

The women's clothing company Land's End just launched a year-long campaign to honor pro-abortion feminist Gloria Steinem by donating to one of her organizations.

Earlier this month, the company published an interview and photo-shoot with Steinem on its website to announce the campaign, centered around Steinem's work to pass an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Steinem is a well-known abortion activist who once said women "need" abortion.

Land's End highlighted Steinem as one of its "Legends," individuals who have made a difference in both their respective industries and the world at large and have paved the way for others to follow.

For every buyer who orders an ERA Coalition logo monogram on one of its items, Land’s End will donate $3 to the coalition’s Fund for Women’s Equality, Inc., according to the website. The campaign - "in honor of Gloria's work" - is running now through Jan. 31, 2017, the website states.

Steinem told the company that she is part of a new national effort to pass an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution.

"It's a statement of principle," Steinem said. "It just says that men and women have equal rights, and that equality under the law shall not be denied. From 1972 to 1982, we tried to get the Equal Rights Amendment into the Constitution, but we fell short by three states of getting it ratified.

"We're still not part of the Constitution of the United States," she continued. "One reason we need an Equal Rights Amendment is because nowhere in the Constitution does the word 'women' appear. We need a constitutional principle of female equality."

Keep up with the latest pro-life news and information on Twitter.

Steinem's description of the ERA sounds simple and uncontroversial, but pro-life groups warn that there is more to it than meets the eye. The amendment originally was introduced by pro-life feminist Alice Paul in 1923 to write women's equality into the Constitution; but pro-lifers say new versions of the amendment could expand abortion.

National Right to Life Legislative Director Douglas Johnson previously talked with LifeNews.com about the ERA when the Arkansas state legislature defeated an attempt to ratify it in 2007.

He says the sweeping language of the 1972 ERA would be used as a legal weapon against virtually all laws that regulate abortion.

"In other states, major national pro-ERA organizations have argued that laws limiting tax-funded abortions or requiring parental consent for minors’ abortions violate ERAs," Johnson explained.

Should the ERA be adopted, it would invalidate the federal Hyde Amendment and all state restrictions prohibiting tax-funded abortions. Likewise, it would nullify any federal or state restrictions even on partial-birth abortions or third-trimester abortions (since these are sought "only by women").

Johnson said laws that allow government-supported medical facilities and personnel - including religiously affiliated hospitals - to refuse to participate in abortions would likely be in jeopardy as well.

I can do without Gloria Steinem forever. Probably will, too, given her track record.

First thing my wife asked: “Is she still alive”? My response: “It is alleged that she is but from the picture maybe not”!

I suspect this will not go over well for that store.

I won’t shop there.

Ann Coulter has fallen out of favor on this site, but she was right as rain on her comparison between Gloria Steinem and Phyllis Schlafly.

I’ll be going without Land’s End clothing for the foreseeable future as well.

The one that really gets me is that Hanna Andersson supports abortion. You would think a company that makes excellent clothing for children would be in favor of more children in this world, but, no.

Yep.

Threw away what I had today. Shirts, jeans. All gone.

Not good enough to use as rags to clean my kitty litter box.

Would have been redundant.

Ann Coulter ...was right as rain on her comparison between Gloria Steinem and Phyllis Schlafly.

The one where Coulter says Schlafly is an intellectual and Steinem a clown? (I paraphrase.) If so, I agree.

UPDATE ON 2ND VOTE AND LAND’S END...

Lands’ End Pulls Abortion Advocate from Easter Catalog and Website

Earlier this week, The Stream asked 2nd Vote how we felt about the popular clothing retailer Land’s End choosing to feature pro-abortion advocate Gloria Steinem in their upcoming Easter catalog:

“...it was disappointing that Land’s End would try to revive its brand by glorifying someone like Gloria Steinem, who has made a career undermining the value of life. 2nd Vote’s research has shown that Land’s End has remained relatively neutral on matters of policy since the company was spun off from Sears Holdings.
However, releasing a catalog that celebrates Easter, and the new hope presented by the meaning of the holiday, while simultaneously launching an initiative to support Steinem’s pro-abortion ERA Coalition is incredibly tone-deaf,” said Kuykendall.

Ironically, recent media reports suggest that CEO Frederica Marchionni, the writer of the article, is seeking to bring younger customers to the brand. Perhaps Marchionni should pay more attention to polling that indicates Millennials hold stronger pro-life views than previous generations, and [she should] realize that social conservatives and people of faith don’’t want their shopping dollars to fund pro-abortion advocacy.

Just a few hours ago, we were notified by The Stream that Land’s End issued an apology and decided to scrub the interview and Gloria Steinem from their website.

A new article includes 2nd Vote’s reaction:
“By scrubbing the Gloria Steinem interview from its website and issuing an apology, Land’s End is proving that companies will respond when conservatives hold them accountable for their advocacy. While public acknowledgement of their customer’s values is commendable, 2nd Vote believes that Land’s End must still make assurances that our shopping dollars won’t be used to fund advocacy that stands in stark contrast to our values by publicly discontinuing its relationship with the ERA Coalition.”

Thank you again for your support,

Lance Wray
Executive Director, 2nd Vote
