Apparently, freepers don't travel much. While indeed, some parts of Vatican City are walled, St. Peter's Square is not. That is how you enter the city - free of charge, no security. A huge, wide open square. In other words, it is unprotected. How else do ordinary citizens get to the Sistine Chapel?
