1 million Walmart workers getting a raise on Saturday
wtkr ^ | 2-18-2016 | cnn wire

More than 1.2 million Walmart employees will get a raise this Saturday.

The company will boost its minimum wage to $10 an hour from $9. But it's not just minimum wage workers who are getting raises. The change applies to virtually all of its hourly workers, including some supervisors, which make up the majority of the company's 1.4 million workers.

The wage hike will boost a full-time worker's average hourly wage to $13.38. The average hourly wage for part-timers will climb to $10.58 an hour.

This is the second step of a two-phase increase announced last year. The company also said it's changed its scheduling procedures to give workers more advanced notice of their shifts, and has increased the paid time off.

The changes do not come cheap -- they will cost the company an additional $1.5 billion this year, on top of the $1.2 billion that last year's wage hikes.

Walmart, which employs more workers than any other U.S. company, has become a focal point in the debate about the nation's minimum wage. "Our Walmart," a union-backed group, has called for a $15 minimum wage and has called the increased wages at the chain a "publicity stunt." Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders regularly attacks Walmart wages in his campaign stump speech.

Walmart officials declined to comment on those criticisms.

WM doesn’t have a lot of room for that.
They are already struggling with Aldi on the grocery side.

Walmart had a net profit of 4.57 billion last year so they can afford to put a third of that towards the people who do the work. I applaud them for doing so. So many retail businesses (and others) treat their employees like crap and try to squeeze every nickel of profit to make their stock go up (and of course the CEO’s stock options).

Raising prices would decrease sales and hurt the bottom line.

Most WMs have them already.
But checkers are a small percentage of their workforce.
You have to remember all the grunts you don’t see on the off shifts and in the warehouse operations.

For the fiscal year ended January 31, 2015, Walmart increased net sales by 1.9% to $482.2 billion and returned $7.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

And look at the liberal reaction. Wal mart tries to do something to benefit their employees. Yet the same liberals who constantly criticize that company are still pissed off anyway.

When you are on liberals “hit list” is there anything you can do to gain any support from them for your efforts, or will the liberals still be angry at you anyway????

At the Walmart groceries only store in my city, they have scanners but no person helping with them.

So you can either hope to walk away without paying or get stuck behind a sea of people who can't operate the scanner and have jammed all the scanner lines.

Didn’t they just close a bunch of stores recently? This could explain it.

I dont like the self checkout system, personally.

And if I ran a business not sure I would want that.

Reason being, how easy would it be for shoppers to neglect to scan a few items here and there, from their cart full of items??? The losses from that could eat up savings on labor costs involved in hiring fewer cashiers.

In addition, fewer human employees on the premises could easily invite more shoplifting from the people who do that sort of thing. Less chance of being confronted and all that.

Almost all of the store closings were their C-Store format....and about a dozen reg or super center stores....

Store closings were about 1 % of total stores....

In other words...it hardly affected them....

I am not against people getting raises. This is about 1 percent of their work force. A private company should be able to give a raise if they want.

Some of you guys are very anti-capitalist. Walmart is a private company and can give a raise if they like. My gosh some of you probably would love workers getting 10 cents an hour.

——Monday, Walmart employees can’t afford the additional costs due to their raises. ——

The post you responded to was about increased food prices to pay for the new wage guild lines....

I can assure you WM has already figured in the new labor costs way before Monday raises and have already increased their margins to cover some of the cost....

New higher wages will also be covered by more productivity from employees and streamlined supply management and more efficient logistics...

Adding a single penny to each item sold is billions of dollars of sales...
