The employee of a water utility owned by the Spanish city of Cadiz didn't appear at its office for up to six years and "did absolutely no work" for three years prior to his retirement in 2011, said the ruling issued last month and provided to The Associated Press Frida

The case has made headlines across Spain this week, and current Cadiz Deputy Mayor Martin Vila told reporters Friday he was amazed that "a person could be hired for years and collecting (pay) without doing anything whatsoever."

Big news in spain!
In Chicago if don't have any 'ghost payrollers' in the family; sorry, but are simply lacking.

I've worked with people like that.

I might pay him if he wasn’t around making mistakes and causing problems.

I’ll be he wasn’t sexually harassing anyone at work. That is worth A LOT.

He did only have to pay a year back. It was worth the gamble.

I’ve had managers I wish had done the same as this employee. On a related note, I work in the water industry. There are a LOT of water system employees who do nothing.

I remember hearing about one guy at some gov’t agency who got fired for AWOL. He apparently did a lot of fictitious “coordinating” with one of the intel agencies when in fact he just went home or elsewhere. Don’t know if he did any jail time, but IIRC he did have to pay back a lot of money for leave.

I did a job years ago on a government site. Flew to the site with all of our gear - took two days to meet up with the guy to get started. We would get there early and his secretary would say “Oh - you just missed him, he’s at a morning meeting. Come back at noon.”

Anyway, on the third day we caught him as he was heading out the door in the morning and he got us squared away and we went to the project site.

Explained to the guy at the site the reason for our delay.

“Oh yeah - Tom doesn’t do any work here. He comes in early in the morning, turns on his lights and computer. Then he heads into town for his second job for an engineering firm. Drives by on his way home to turn everything off again.”

I used to work in public broadcasting. There were some true masters of doing nothing and disappearing whenever for however long with no questions.

Come to DC and look at Congress, the White House and half the media. Selling out your country does not count as “WORK” and being incompetent, stupid, and lazy are not three laudable personal qualities (except with Democrats).

The Cadiz work - an amateur, but a successful and richer amateur.

In DC, we have nothing but PROs.

he was amazed that "a person could be hired for years and collecting (pay) without doing anything whatsoever."

I've worked with people like that.

I work for a local government, and I have that problem.
I do the majority or all of the work, while my "coworker" works occasionally, but mainly talks on his cell phone, watches bass guitar tutorials, golf tip videos, and movies on the government's computer and on his personal tablet, sometimes ALL DAY LONG.
There is plenty of work to do! I'm not a supervisor, so I have no official say.
The foreman knows about it, but his hands are tied by the woman who is over this particular operation.
If they actually wanted to get rid of him, they would have a very hard time because he is a minority.
Do I think our local government could be shrunk down? Yes! And I have a good idea of a where to start!

While affirmative action has destroyed opportunities for many white men, it has also ensured a lot of job security for many of us working; at the end of the day, the token black/Hispanic/female “plays office” while we do the work.
