I had thought before today that these "Hitler reacts" videos long ago jumped the shark just because it was so easy to apply them to absolutely anything. But just because you can do it doesn't mean you can do it well, and that takes us to today. Behold the true elevation of a genre, my friends:
There is this stupid notion that goes around the Internet called "Godwin's Law," which is supposed to establish that the first person who brings up Hitler in an argument has lost the argument. Screw that. The people who say that are idiots. Hitler was a real historical figure who perpetrated evil on a massive scale and took rhetorical tactics not so unlike those we see today to horrifying extremes.

When people tell me “You just lost the argument. Godwin’s law.”
I tell them “Yeah, but I’m not arguing with you. I’m trying to explain something to you, that you need to know.”

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

The people who invoke “Godwin’s Law” when one of these Hitler videos come out are completely missing the point of the Hitler videos.
I have seen some that were absolutely hilarious.

There is this stupid notion that goes around the Internet called "Godwin's Law"
It's actually an old Usenet law, and it was actually pretty valid in the '80s and '90s. At that time, at least, Hitler was considered the greatest monster who ever lived, with Stalin and Mao far behind in college circles. Evoking Hitler usually meant the arguer had run out of substantive arguments and was one short step away from name-calling.
Godwin's Law doesn't seem to be invoked as frequently these days, probably because accusations of racism or sexism are supposed to have the same "shut up, I can't hear you" effect as accusations of Hitler-sympathy used to. Also, given the quality of history instruction in public schools, it's doubtful millenials know much about Hitler, let alone Stalin or Mao.

You are so, SO my hero for saying that! :) Amen, and yes! "Godwin's Law" has lately been used to shut up anyone who believes in profound evil (especially used by pro-aborts).

Yep.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law
It did have some exceptions, though, unlike what the little kiddies on the Internet scream when they hear something they don’t agree with:
From Wikipedia:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The law and its corollaries would not apply to discussions covering known mainstays of Nazi Germany such as genocide, eugenics, or racial superiority, nor, more debatably, to a discussion of other totalitarian regimes or ideologies.
To: AnotherUnixGeek
Actually, the original Godwin's Law was not a claim that reductio ad hitlerum is a fallacy, but the assertion that the probability of Hitler being mentioned asymptotically approached 1 as the number of posts to a Usenet thread increased.
Delightful!
By the way the BEST one I ever saw was about parking in downtown Tel Aviv...
Unfortunately it is almost impossible to find.
But... It is an absolute masterpiece.
