My local pawn shop

Posted on 02/08/2016 12:29:25 PM PST by jstaff

As regards nothing political, I made my weekly stroll through the local pawn shops today. Mondays are when they put all the guns they recovered from recent boating accidents and I sometimes pick up a good deal. There was a woman in one trying to pawn a small safe. She didn't have the combination so couldn't get open. Apparently she had called ahead to ask if they took safes and was told yes. She was screaming to heaven about all the work she did getting it there and they better give her some money for it.

The guy behind the counter explained how worthless it is if you can't get in it but she was too dense to understand. Finally he told her he would give her $10 and asked for some ID. She left the safe on the counter and was out the door in 10 seconds flat. This is what we are working so hard to support with our tax dollars.

If you are authorized, you can get info from the safw=e manufacturer on how to open it. Costs money (I made a nice buck) but there is no safe that can’t be opened. Mosbey gave me diagrams, drawings and instructions to enter one in the floor of a house. I was hired, opened it (after two days) and never opened it, I walked away when it was free. Later the owner of the house told me he returned some personal effects to the family, found some OLLLLDD correspondence from the Civil War and other things the family didn’t want. He tipped me $200 and was happy for the reading. I really think he sold the antiquities but the family didn’t want to be bothered with them.

I have a safe to move but getting it loaded on a trailer is the hard part. It’s in a tiny carport in a small half circle driveway.

It was an office safe on wheels. I tried a two ton engine hoist and the bolts in the hoist stretched.

Getting it offloaded at my dad’s place is no problem. Pick a crane, backhoe, wheeled loader.

Be careful about old double shotguns with Damascus barrels, those things are ticking time bombs. Be particularly careful about guns like Charles Daly, Parker, WW Greener or Sauer guns that have those. I run a disposal service for such guns and will take them off your hands free of charge. I’ll even pay for shipping.

I have friends at a pawn shop and have watched these type people come in and try and pawn/sell their crap and heard the stories and am amazed.

I watched one lady bring in a gold chain she said she paid $2300 for at a national chain. She was wanting to pawn for $1000. The pawn shop offered her melt value which was around $250 at the time and she about had a stroke cursing and ranting they were ripping her off, finally she walked out the door showing her self to be an idiot the whole way.

Some bring in their old CRT tv’s to pawn or sell and they won’t take them anymore and many people won’t lug them back out to their car and just leave them. I have seen signs for $5 or even free on them.

One of my friends works in the electronic dept. and he was telling me they have one lady who five years ago brought in a simple DVD player and pawned it for $20 which the guy said was a generous pawn amount but she had been a regular customer for years. Anyway for the last five years she has paid interest on this $20 each month rather than just get it out of pawn for the original $20, which comes to many-many times the original $20 amount, go figure....

My Mom bought a house a while back. After a couple of years found a floor safe, but could not locate the old owners. Eventually, she replaced that floor and just covered it up. I think I would have been too curious to do that.

Me too. I would have gone so far as to pay to have it opened.

If I didn't just throw away my old CRT's (TV's and monitors) I hauled them to Goodwill and "donated" them. I seriously can't believe anyone would be so stupid as to expect to get paid even five bucks for them.

I recently bought a brand new handgun at a local pawn shop...an hour before closing time on a Friday afternoon. The background check took around 20 minutes, and I just sat and ‘people watched’.

Hard to explain what I saw - there is a class of Americans who don’t live paycheck to paycheck...but quite literally live day to day. A wide variety of items were presented to the presiding judge (pawnshop worker), who would decree whether or not the item was acceptable, and declare a value. Some people left angry, some people took the offer...

...all were DESPERATE.

Were they paying the rent? More likely, on a Friday afternoon, they lugged their kid’s video game system in to get some ‘party’ money for the weekend.

I suspect this class is growing...always desperate, always dependent on the government, or some relative they’re bumming money off of.

I have to say, although she was often mocked, Nancy Reagan was on target: Just Say No. I think 90% of our nation’s problems have their roots in drug abuse.

Just my observation from the local pawn shop.

Sure. As astute as Freepers are about politics, they sure don’t know much about boating. Half the people on here lost their guns in boating accidents. I left all mine in my suit coat and the cleaners lost them.

Too bad she put a new floor over. You never know what may be in them, but it’s possible you may not WANT to know. I got my education as a cop and opened a few that were found in rivers, Lakes and gravel pits. The most money found was $100 plus change. The burglars spent that much in effort and didn’t get crap.

A few years ago, my stepson got a job clearing out foreclosed houses. He brought home a half dozen old tvs over a period of months. I’ve given a few away, and still use a few. They never seem to go bad.

Around here, you have to pay someone to take them. And you have to deliver them yourself.
