Care at Native American health facilities called 'horrifying and unacceptable' in Senate hearing

One woman died after she was left on the floor of her hospital room, overdosed by poorly trained staff.

Others died in ambulances on long journeys to emergency rooms because local facilities were closed for being such a mess.

...

"What we've found is simply horrifying and unacceptable. In my view, the information provided to this committee and witness first hand can be summed up in one word: malpractice," Wyoming Republican Senator John Barrasso, who chairs the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.

"The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services -- another agency within the Department of Health and Human Services -- has confirmed not only that these same problems continue to fester, but that they pose immediate risk to patient safety," Barrasso added.

"In fact, they have led to multiple patient deaths."

One of those deaths was Debra Free, who died in the Winnebago Hospital in northeastern Nebraska in 2011.

"Since at least 2007, this IHS facility has been operating with demonstrated deficiencies which should not exist at any hospital in the United States," Free's niece, Victoria Kitcheyan, told the committee.

"I am not talking about unpainted walls or equipment that is outdated," Kitcheyan, who is treasurer of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, said.

"I am talking about a facility which employs emergency room nurses who do not know how to administer such basic drugs as dopamine; employees who did not know how to call a Code Blue; an emergency room where defibrillators could not be found or utilized when a human life was at stake; and a facility which has a track record of sending patients home with aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs, only to have them airlifted out from our Reservation in a life threatening state."

Government ran medical care is not a wonderful idea? Surely you are mistaken!

My daughter-in-law works in the IHS field (she is 1/8 Native and certified), She was very pro native going into it, but as become jaded based on her experiences with tribal leadership and poor quality of staff.

Her experience working on one Res was sufficient to open her eyes to the realities of tribal corruption.

Sounds rather like some of the stories emanating from VA hospitals, does it not? As others have noted, this is the face of government-run health care. Aside from the military (and even that’s coming into doubt of late), is there anything the government does better than the private sector? (And no, that’s not a rhetorical question.)

But I thought socialized medicine would work for Native Americans, just like it works for veterans.

Not to worry. Dorkbama the Muslim thinks that “undocumented democrats and Muslims are far, far, FAR more important than the one set of folks that we should devote more funding to.

There is an answer, of course, but Revolution II is just not on everyone’s minds.

Yet.

"Affirmative action" does have consequences. Diploma mills are going to get us all killed.

Used to be a poster here who wrote of experiences as a volunteer with the IHS. I looked forward to his tales. He just stopped after a while. Can’t remember who, he could have written a screenplay.

It’s always been this way. The difference is now all healthcare will be like Indiancare.

On many reservations, land is not owned individually but by the whole tribe.

This often makes securing loans for opening new businesses IMPOSSIBLE, since loaners can’t seize anything in case of default.

Most Indians are collectivists.

Is the IHS secretly trying to make Britain’s NHS look good by comparison?

I do not think we can blame this on nObama.
The BIA has a long and storied history of neglect and mistreatment of the American Indian, dating back damn near two centuries.
Reservations and Reservation life is a close to life in the Soviet Union as we have ever come in this country.

I have a sister in law who works as a teacher on several reservations. Total corruption and incompetence.

Hey, I know, we should get the government involved!

Nope. The tribal elders in the ruling families siphon off most of the money that comes into the reservations. Ordinary tribal types are virtual cannon fodder - “oh look how they suffer! Give us more money to fix the problem you evil round eyes!” They must need new homes, cars, vacations etc.

Ordinary tribal types are pretty much kept strung out on drugs and alcohol so there is no revolt if that idea even occurred to them since this is how the tribes have been run for at least a century.

You can feel sorry for this situation or that individual, but fixing it - not happening. You have as much chance of fixing that as a white guy has of fixing inner city black culture.

The whole BIA is one huge scam we have to pay for. Politicians hold hearings, feel good, get kick backs form the tribes, get reelected. This hole mess is far worse in western tribes that have casinos.

As for the environment - the tribes are some of the worst offenders of the land and of the animals - one tribe in Wisconsin uses the local river to dispose of its raw sewage. Some tribes out west dynamite salmon on the spawning grounds and sell the blasted fish to buyers who by law have to buy the fish.
