It was an exciting race, but the results are in: Ted Cruz has won the Iowa caucuses.
The senator from Texas was my favorite going in, but the talking heads in the media and the pollsters didn't agree. According to them, Iowa was Donald Trump's for the taking.
Well, not quite so. He lost big tonight. Early in the evening people thought it could be too close to call, but that was absolutely not the case. Cruz led from the get-go and stayed on top all throughout the night.
What this means is simple: Cruz has rallied Iowa conservatives behind him, and we can expect conservatives, supporters of the Tea Party, and evangelicals to flock to him even more. Especially now that The Donald has suffered a humiliating blow.
Speaking of Trump, he will now have to win New Hampshire. If he does not, his game is up and he'll fade away.
According to Fox News, Marco Rubio is "the big winner," but that's nonsense. He finished third. Third. He did better than many thought (I actually predicted he and Trump would almost be too close to call, but I gave it to Rubio beforehand because he had momentum), but a bronze medal is never gold. It's now up to him to compete in New Hampshire by rallying the moderate and establishment vote around his campaign. If he does, he may come very close in the Granite State which would make him a real competitor.
But it's not even clear that this scenario will happen. Many Cruz insiders believe he will do better than many expect in New Hampshire.

Greatly enjoyed how Cruz was in the lead right from 4% reporting in.
Cruz has come a long way from a few months ago when he was polling around 5%, but he has a long way yet to go. At the very least more people will see him as a candidate that can beat Trump and win the nomination.
Ted will surprise in NH too. You think DT is thinking about ground games now? I’m sure Cruz ground game is as good in NH as in Iowa.
I can hear the celebration from Montreal.....
Donald Duck has his Twitter game. Soon the insults will be coming.
As well as the rest of civilization.
Yes. #groundgamematters
Ted has the smarts to outwit the GOPe. And the spiritual fortitude to overcome the Hildabeast.
It had been uphill battle for him. All the nincompoops in the media were saying even yesterday that Cruz is "fading" fast in IA. The pundits/pollsters/MSM were wrong.
Cool.
Cruz won with about 27.7% to 24.4%, which is not a big win. It’s a win, and that helps Cruz, but it’s not in any way decisive. I hope Cruz supporters will not hold anything in this week or the next against Trump, and that Trump supporters will feel the same about Cruz.
The big issue here is Rubio. Marco of the Gang of Eight, the leading pro-Amnesty candidate, did very well at 23.2%. We have to make sure that a pro-freedom candidate beats Rubio every single time. Rubio would be catastrophic, while Cruz, Trump, and Carson would each be acceptable in different ways. Keep the big picture in mind.
I like Candidate Rubio, and I almost always agree with what he says. The problem is that the real Rubio, the one who takes office, immediately turns his back on Candidate Rubio’s promises and does whatever the insiders want. That’s where the big campaign donations come from, and Rubio is good at collecting those from the establishment. Please keep in mind that Trump and Cruz are each good enough to get support from about half of FR. That’s a very high standard, and it should mean something. Don’t let the Trump/Cruz fuss give the election to Rubio; that would be like Ireland’s Catholics and Protestants squabbling until Muslims take over their country!
With only 1 precinct left to report, here is the final allocation of Iowa’s 27 Republican delegates:
Ted Cruz 8 on 51,649 votes or 27.7%
Donald Trump 7 on 45,416 votes or 24.3%
Marco Rubio 7 on 43,132 votes or 23.1%
Ben Carson 3 on 17,393 votes or 9.3%
Rand Paul 1 on 8,478 votes or 4.5%
Jeb Bush 1 on 5,235 votes or 2.8%
Congratulations to Ted Cruz on his big win tonight.

No, at the very least cruz will take out trump and clear the lanes for
Marco Rubio.
Very happy and excited that Cruz made history and won the Iowa caucuses while opposing ethanol mandates. Conservatism won, cronyism lost.
Rubio took votes away from Trump, most of those who voted were i think former democrats.
By the end of March, Cruz will be well on his way to a lock.
BTW, don't minimize this Iowa win. In a crowded field, Cruz's percentage margin of victory was big - and, Cruz won with more votes cast for him than ever before received by a Republican candidate for President in Iowa history. He also won within a historic Iowa caucus vote total of more than 186,000 votes, something all the experts said would give the victory to Trump.
This Cruz victory was indeed significant.
I just heard this great news, and I’m almost overwhelmed that the nasty prophesies of the Trumpeters ar found to be false. Wheee! Thanks for posting this encouraging headline!
