Daytona 24 Hour Sports Car Race Open Thread
International Motor Sports Association ^ | 30 Jan, 2016 | Self

Posted on 01/30/2016 7:52:39 AM PST by MtnClimber

The race starts today 1-30-16 at 4 pm EST and ends tomorrow at the same time. Coverage at the web site or Fox Sports 1 Starting at 2 pm EST and switching to Fox Sports 2 at 4 pm EST.

A very interesting race this year with the first race for the new Ford GT with two cars entered by Ford/Chip Gnassi Racing in the GTLM (GT Le Mans) class. In the Prototype class Scott Pruett is trying to break his tie with Hurley Haywood for most Daytona 24 overall wins where they each have 5 wins.

A mix of 4 classes of cars where 2 are Prototype classes running with different rules packages and 2 GT production car-based classes. The Prototype classes are faster, but in 2001 the Corvette C5R had less problems and won overall.

It’s going to be IMSA’s best year yet. ‘Cannot wait for the green flag.

I left the Porsches off my list. Qualifying was Thursday and had heavy rain. The lap times were way down from practice and the cars qualified in four sessions by class. The Prototypes had really heavy rain that hurt their speed. The top two qualifying speeds were the two factory Porsche 911 RSR cars in GTLM class. The cars will start by class with P, PC, GTLM and finally GTD so it won’t make much difference in a 24-hour race. The race is expected to have no rain so the Prototypes will be fastest.

“in 2001 the Corvette C5R had less problems and won overall.”

Back in the old American LeMans series they used to have a GT1 class, the only entrant in which was the Corvette GT1 with the huge 7 liter V8 engines. My gracious, those things put out a glorious sound and literally shook the ground when they came by.

One of my all-time favorite GT race cars. Right up there with the Ferrari 250 GTO.

I’m eager to see how the new Ford GT will perform with that EcoBoost engine in the GTLM class. My man Joey Hand will be driving one.

Weather has caused an ‘inverted start’, going to be interesting start to the race! Also nice to see Rubens Barrichello drive. Lots on new cars.

Joey spun the GT in the rain during qualifying. Spun coming out of the Bus Stop Chicane. Did not do any damage.

Yeah, both Ford GT entrants not having a very auspicious debut, to say the least. But I did note that the #67 has the fastest lap time so far of the GTLM class, so they may be formidable in the “sprint” races ahead in the schedule.

Yes, I was not expecting them to last 24 hours without major problems in their first race. Corvette doing well in GTLM if they can avoid penalties.
