Tivo help needed (Vanity)

Hi All, I have a Tivo Premiere XL HD from 2010 which is acting up. It is stuck in this updating/one moment/blue screen of death mode since yesterday. I have Lifetime service, so I'd like to keep this and swap out the hard drive for a larger model. Has anyone ever used Weaknees.com for this situation? Thanks in advance!

I’ve used weaknees with no problem. They provided a new disk - with everything installed - good instructions and the tools. But that was quite a while ago. They’d be my first stop if I ever had a problem again (I still have 2)

Weaknees is good. I’ve purchased parts from them before. Hopefully it’s just the hard drive! Good luck!

Think I should send it in? What else would it be?

Back when I had a satellite dish, I got a few extra years of life out of my Tivo with a new hard drive from Weaknees. The instructions were good and had no problems installing it.

Could be something with the hardware itself. I had a satellite TiVo where one of the tuners was going bad and causing all sorts of odd behavior which I though was a bad hard drive at first.

Are you going to order the hard drive from weaknees and replace it yourself?

Probably. I few weeks ago when it was approaching 90% full, it kept freezing during playback, and rebooted by itself. I looked online and the hard drive was the culprit for that.

You can try using the kickstart codes to troubleshoot it-

Restart your TIVO. When the yellow light flashes during the boot sequence (this is time sensitive), press the pause button on the remote. Then type 57 on the remote to kick off the file system check. You’ll get a green screen and it’ll check the drive.

Good luck!

Yep used them for a few parts to keep my two old Hughes SDVR-40’s going. I ordered the software hacks and put in a couple of bigger hard drives. I used to look for old 40’s on Ebay and bought a couple extra for parts. At one time I had two 500G hard drives for 900 hrs recording time on one unit and the motherboard and power supply died forcing me to use my last Hughes 40 unit. Currently running one DVR40 with a 500G and another with a 250G, trouble is finding older compatible hard drives.

Alas my Tivo’s are starting to show signs of coming failure and I may have to either upgrade to the new Directv Tivo or their Genie system. My wife is a Tivo fanatic so I will probably go that route. I did have a Directv rep tell me that eventually Directv would force me to give up the old Tivo’s, will see.

When my older Hughes Tivo died I debated going to the new DirectTivo but DirectTivo doesn’t integrate with the TiVo service and doesn’t even use the standard remotes. Instead I bit the bullet and went cable with a TiVo Roamio. (Bought the 500gb model and then promptly slapped in a 2TB drive before activating). I’m not exactly thrilled with Comcast but it’s really no worse than Directv and I can make use of the TiVo app and the slide remote I purchased. (Long term I’ll probably cut the cord and use the Roamio’s OTA portion to still get TV)
