“Hurt”- Johnny Cash. He knew the end was close
“Not Gonna Miss You”- Glenn Campbell. Recorded it while he could.
“The Show Must Go On”- Freddy Mercury

Trent Reznor, after seeing Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Hurt,” said that Johnny Cash owned it now. Reznor originally wrote it and performed it with Nine Inch Nails.

It reminded me very much of his pal Freddie’s last video, “The Show Must Go On,” but more “Bowie” and creepy and less sad. Freddy was more explicit and it really was a sad thing. Bowie seems to have gone beyond sadness and more into the ether, as was his wont.
Tear jerking line from “The Show” :
“I guess I’m learning, I must be warmer now
I’ll soon be turning round the corner now...”

Good thing he had the face for it. I know if he had Quentin Tarantino’s face he wouldn’t have been able to do the chameleon thing. ;)

I just watched Cash’s rendition of Hurt again. Every time I see it I am reduced to tears. He is expressing so much remorse, so sincerely. When his ex-wife appears, older now, and looking so sadly at Johnny, I bawl like a baby boy.
Sorry, Trent Reznor. This is no longer your song. This is now Johnny Cash’s.

Someone said something interesting somewhere: Bowie’s music was genius, but there was something more: The dude simply personified pure ‘cool’.

So let’s sink another drink
Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had the chance I’d ask the world to dance
And I’ll be dancin’ with myself.
I’m gonna miss him.

I love how human he is in this video, and that at last he shared it with us so generously, after so many decades of carefully managed artifice. It’s very touching.

Also, Warren Zevon recorded the Dylan song "Knockin' on Heavens Door" on his last album when he knew he was dying of cancer.
