Here, Long Island, NY, is not prime snowy owl country.
I was traveling home 40 years ago in some light snow when something made me stop the car, get out, and watch....a Snowy Owl hovering/hunting over a field near my house... Immediately thought why is this owl here...why is he hunting during the day.
Later the light snow turned into one of the worst blizzards of the year. I figured the owl knew it was coming and was getting fed while he could. Why he was so far south I could’t figure till the other day when I watched a PBS (yeah that PBS...I try to keep away from it). It explained that juvenile Owls head pretty far south for a year or two to polish their hunting skills and head back to the tundra to breed.
