I have a really GREAT TRAINER! He is excellent! I love his classes- and he LOVES dogs so he goes the extra mile.
It really is about training the human to understand the dog though. Training makes all the difference in a good versus bad relationship.
Just as having a dog spayed/neutered is required in most shelter adoptions- I think basic training should be required too. It would make a positive difference.
That is really unfair and pompous in its own way.
Shelter dogs are risky, more than the usual. You don’t really know at all what you are getting; just hope what you see is the norm for them, or have that “I can change him” attitude.
With a purebred and a breeder, one has an idea of the background. So much the better with a pup, who hasn’t been totally imprinted by previous experiences possibly to the bad.
Nothing is perfect, but there is less risk involved picking wisely from a known breeding of a certain breed with a person who is experienced with them.
My own family had a series of mutts from the shelter. Not saying any were terrible, or that my family really knew how to deal with dogs (although my dad had enough experience, but that included no-nonsense views of animals both hunting and farming). But they were problematic. The best dog we ever had, I had researched as a teen and ended up taking from a very famous handler in my favorite breed, traveling hundreds of miles to see and paying bucks. She was incomparable. I was truly proud of her, didn’t simply “love” her, because she was a great example of canine character, albeit partly due to my diligence in training her.
Let people do what they may.
What would happen if everyone was really responsible and good at conditioning and training and neutering, and there were no dogs at the shelter? Would you be glad or wouldn’t know where to get your next dog?
Thank you for bringing up spay/neuter. If more people would take that responsible action we would definitely not have the overcrowded shelters.
All our pets are neutered/spayed and are up to date on their vaccines.
The costs are not prohibitive..
Shelters and organizations sometimes have traveling spay and neuter vans, or shelters often have special deals with local vets who will spay/neuter at reduced costs, or for free.
Would like to join Doggie Ping and Cat Ping
Lowest? Never?
You never had the cat I literally rescued (no, not simply “sign the form and pay”) from a weirdo abusive kid.
Suffice it to say, she is the only animal I ever had I could not in good conscience try to pawn off on someone, either to buy from me or simply take for free.
She was that evil. I don’t care why, but nothing we did changed her one bit. If she had been a German Shepherd like my typical pet, we would’ve been goners. Nope, wouldn’t pass that devil to anyone knowingly.
Amen! To the intelligence and demeanor of mixed breeds. My hubby is the cat person in our household, though the Shiloh Shepherd boys are his choosing, he refers to them as mama-boys.
It is criminal how people abandon their pets around areas where they think they will not be seen.
Pets should be part of a family. They suffer from the same feelings of abandonment, loneliness, and fear that children who are abandoned feel.
I used to volunteer with different organizations, and 20 yrs ago, I volunteered at a kill shelter since I traveled 100% and was home only on the weekends.. It was a shock to me to look in the eyes of some of the dogs that had been there awhile and realize that they knew. Talk about the long green mile.
It was an eye-opening experience for me.
Thank you for the trap/fix/release that you have done and support. My brother is unemployed and disabled in Sacramento. He said there is a program that fixes the American River feral cat program. However, feeds several colonies of cats and if there are any badly injured or ill, he takes them to the vet and takes care of them.
For example, recently someone slit the throats of two of the friendlier cats. One of the two was killed, the other severely wounded. He buried the deceased cat and brought the wounded cat to the vet and still has her. He has also brought senior cats home when they are unable to fend for themselves and feed and care for them until it is time for them to go, sometimes for a couple of years.
Bump for later
Thank you, I needed a DRINK!!
And to you too.
I hear those are called “failed” fosters. Congrats!
You are added to the Kitty Ping List.
OMG.
Not one thread without it.
:(
You nailed it, Wife is now known as a “foster failure” to her fellow volunteers!
To each their own. Nice thing about freedom and liberty. I can own a pure bread working german Shepard Thad from a working line and you can own a mutt. As long as we are free to choose who cares. Liberals will put up more tears, money, commercials, and empathy over dogs and cats than human babies being murdered pre birth.
I love animals. Some are fun some are tasty. some are both.
Oh yeah.
The article made me sad. :o[
But thanks for the ping.
Yep. Sadly the people who pull that nonsense in threads are probably the same people who put Fido in a shelter when he growls at the naughty child who pulls his tail.
I love that show.
