Bicyclists had free rein of Milan's streets Monday during a six-hour ban on private cars in a bid to alleviate persistent smog.
Pollution levels in Italy's business capital have exceeded levels considered healthy for more than 30 days straight, prompting officials to ban private cars from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday this week.

They might want to consider enforcing air pollution controls on vehicles the way Los Angeles did.
They banned hte cars during off-peak hours, too.

Milan has a decent trolley system and a sparse subway. Almost 20 years ago I was working at night at a Milan bank on their computer system. We finished at 2 AM. Our Italian partners drove us back to our hotel in central Milan. We were speeding along through the city at 60 miles an hour. All the stop lights were flashing yellow in all directions. The only rule was priority to the right. It was unnerving.
Many years later I started driving myself in Italy. The general laissez-faire attitude was nice.

Agree 100%. Once you understand Italian driving unwritten rules, it is freeing.
The Lib-Progs are just SALIVATING over stuff like this. They’d LOVE to enact a nationwide car ban in America. Better to herd us into the hive cities and control us, you see.
I rode shotgun over the course of several years before it was necessary to do my own driving. The prospect of driving was daunting, but the reality was quite fun.
We used to joke that driver training in Italy was an internship on bicycles. They had to deal with the traffic with no "protection".
I had a similar aversion to driving in downtown Paris. I have only had to do it a couple of times, but I surprised myself on how easy it was.
