The new space-based adventure series "The Expanse" debuts on Syfy tonight, and it's packed with high-flying action, interplanetary politics and intriguing locations.

Based on the book by James S. A. Corey (a pen name for co-authors Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham), "The Expanse" takes place 200 years in the future, when humans have settled Mars and the asteroid belt. The two-night premiere event begins at 10 p.m. EST tonight (Dec. 14) and continues at the same time tomorrow (Dec. 15), but if you just can't wait, you can also watch the series' first episode online on Syfy's website, Hulu, YouTube, Amazon and other online providers, where it has been available for the past three weeks.

I watched the first past last night online.

Its visually spectacular and the low and zero G effects are great.

Magnificent effects, but by the time we've colonized the moon, Mars, and the asteroids for generations, wouldn't people be wildly different than they are now? Unimaginably different, maybe bizarre human-machine or genetically engineered beings?

I get that in a sense, human nature doesn't change, but would the 23rd century really have much room for Tom Jane doing his stale gumshoe routine with his little hat?

There is a social justice element to it with the agitation of the Belters who feel that Earth and Mars have stripped the asteroid belt of water and minerals as well as treated them like slaves. Its a big part of the story but there is a lot of other stuff going on like a cold war between Earth and Mars.

The UN certainly wasn’t treated kindly in the first episode.

They do call the Belters “Long bones” because their arms and legs have gotten longer and thinner due to generations in the low gravity.

They can’t take the gravity of earth.

with his little hat?

And weird hairdo.

It does seem that Syfy is returning to the genre rather than more reality crap.

Haven series finale is a 2-hour program on Thursday.

Muscles get weaker in micro-gravity unless they are working out everyday to maintain them from what I studied.

I’ve read all of the major novels in the series, and I have to say that it’s bangin’ good science fiction that has a great story line, interesting characters and some mind boggling, holy sh!t premises behind it.

The early reviews are encouraging. This is the kind of stuff I love to see.

I forgot to mention that there are some great ship to ship combat scenes that hold to the constraints of physics. A rare thing these days

I am not sure if the old Chinese puncture treatments can help what they have if it generational.

Hard boiled noir brushes shoulders with H. P. Lovecraft in outer space. What’s not to like?

Don’t miss the Arthur C. Clarke classic “Childhood’s End”, two hours before The Expanse.

The Childhood’s End mini-series will only run three nights, but The Expanse will be a regular weekly series.
