Cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis resembling borderline-tuberculoid leprosy: a new clinical presentation?

Abstract Both cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis are endemic in Northern Ethiopia. The different clinical presentations depend on the responsible organism and the host's immune response. Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis is the type most frequently seen. Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis is relatively rare and usually associated with mucous membrane involvement. Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis presents with multiple lesions, can be difficult to diagnose and responds less favourably to treatment. We report here 2 patients with unusual presentations of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis presenting with large hypopigmented skin lesions mimicking borderline-tuberculoid leprosy. To our knowledge this presentation has not been described before and may present difficulties in making a definite diagnosis in regions where both leprosy and cutaneous leishmaniasis are endemic.

Lepromatous leprosy and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis are regularly confused, particularly when no skin smears for acid-fast bacillus or Leishman-Donovan bodies are performed.

It sounds like Barry is using “global warming” as a weapon. “Global warming” causes the flesh-eating disease. Right Barry?

This was at rudaw.net:

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A deadly “flesh-eating” disease known as Leishmaniasis has been rapidly spreading in Syria’s rural areas, caused by ISIS dumping bodies in the streets, the head of the Kurdish Red Crescent told Rudaw.

“As a result of abominable acts by ISIS that included the killing of innocent people and dumping their corpses in streets, this is the leading factor behind the rapid spread of Leishmanisis disease,” said Dilqash Isa.

The World Health Organization has warned that Syria’s health system has collapsed under five years of war, helping the disease spread rapidly through a country already plagued by violence.

“We did not have knowledge about this deadly disease before,” a Syrian Kurdish fighter told news agencies. “We have been fighting on the battlefield for almost four years and this disease basically generated from embattled areas of Tal Hamis, Hon and Qosa,”

The first case of the disease, caused by protozoan parasites and usually carried by flies, was reported in September 2013.

By mid- 2014, 500 people had been affected, according to activists reporting on Syria.

Way back in the OT the law was that all human waste needed to be buried outside city walls. Quarantine was also mandatory for certain conditions and one had to wash in running water if you came in contact with the sick. As these are Jewish laws ISIS will not follow them.

Didn’t realize that the Russian Bio-weapon Program was that advanced, but then it’s not really a surprise, considering where the Soviets were in that.

Hopefully we take a few notes here before starting up a ground war with them.

This is spread by sand fleas if I remember right. Since these fleas cannot live in colder, wetter climates they don’t spread beyond the deserts. Makes me wonder if say the Russians or Assad government bred a plane load or two of these pest and dropped them in to ISIS controlled areas? It would be a nearly untraceable biological attack that wouldn’t require a massive cleanup later.

Would make sense, as leishmaniasis vector is a protozoan parasite carried by sand flies. Lots of sand in the Middle East. You have to avoid the carrier fly bites— by using pesticide treated netting at night— only partly effective.

Cut their antibiotic supply potential and they will die— from this along with JDAMs and small arms.

I am trying to find a downside of an arid/subtropical antibiotic resistent flesh rotting microbial disease epidemic coursing through ISIS troups, and can’t think of one.
