Free Ottawa yoga class scrapped over 'cultural issues'

The concept of cultural appropriation is normally applied when a dominant culture borrows symbols of a marginalized culture for dubious reasons -- such as the fad of hipsters donning indigenous headdresses as a fashion statement, without any regard to cultural significance or stereotype.

But Scharf, a yoga teacher with the downtown Rama Lotus Centre, said the concept does not apply in this case, arguing the complaint that killed the program came instead from a "social justice warrior" with "fainting heart ideologies" in search of a cause celebre.

Given that the U of O was founded by the RC Church (though it became secular in 1965), and yoga IS a spiritual practice, the U of O Students Federation is right for once; albeit for the wrong reasons!

consult with students "to make it better, more accessible and more inclusive to certain groups of people that feel left out in yoga-like spaces.

LOL!

I showed this to my friend, an Orthodox Jewish woman who teaches yoga to Jewish women, albeit in modified form — without the spiritual/deistic references. Her intent is not to trivialize yoga; people enjoy it for its therapeutic benefits, although some rabbis do oppose yoga because of its pagan origins.

Funny how on the one hand I support greater cultural sensitivity. But at what cost? Should someone stop practicing acupuncture if he or she is not Chinese? Maybe Chinese doctors shouldn’t be allowed to practice Western medicine. Who gets offended, and why?

Maybe these PC kooks should realize that all cultures borrow from one another.

I think the term African-American is culturally appropriative. Most of the people who adopt that nomenclature have never even been to Africa, and don’t have a clue about the many, many cultures that exist in Africa.

BLM protestors are culturally appropriating white western university educations. They should be removed from campuses until such time that they can respect white culture.

We need to close all the pizza shops in America. This senseless and offensive appropriation of Italian culture must stop.

I am offended by the sight, smell, and lack of bacon, in halal foods.
Outlaw all halal restaurants and all halal foods immediately.
I have been so micro and macro aggressed.
WHO DO I SUE?

"....people enjoy it for its therapeutic benefits..."

I practiced yoga for 30 years when I was a long-distance runner in my youth. It increase my core strength and flexibility. It is not easy. It is much harder to perform properly than most people think. It was very good exercise.

I didn't go in for the spiritual side of it. Just the physical asanas.

Yoga is not the problem. Radical Yoga is the problem.

What we are seeing is a sad shift in society. The notion of there being a right to not be offended has taken wings. I see no good coming of it.

It goes beyond being offended. It has to do with paranoia — seeing racism/sexism/fill-in-the-blank everywhere. It’s subjective — based each person’s perception.

This is like living with someone abusive or psychotic, who sees a vast conspiracy even in the drinking water. You end up walking on eggshells around him or her.

My prediction? Conservatives, especially whites, are going to pack up & leave these places or institutions — which in the end will lose tremendous support. Because flakes & paranoids sure as hell aren’t going to run anything, except to the ground.
