When we played this song at LZ Lambeau, a welcome home event for Vietnam vets and their families held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., in 2010, we were overwhelmed by the response it received, especially by spouses of Vietnam vets. They sang along with tears in their eyes, because they were the ones saying goodbye to the men who were boarding the planes for Vietnam. And it got to soldiers/vets, too. As Jason Sherman, an AFVN DJ during part of his tour in Vietnam, recalled: âLeaving on a Jet Plane brought tears to my eyes.â

Note: In the last ten years or so, hearing aids have made massive improvements, now under some conditions I can hear OK!!
I am glad that that is all you lost. Thank you for serving.
I remember sitting in the chow hall, during basic training in 1969. Run Through the Jungle (CCR) came on every morning. Black is Black was played every lift off in country.
A friend of mine served in “Nam, came back wounded, healed up OK. The sing he brought back was for Christmas time.
On the first day of Christmas truce, Ho Chi gave to me,
A sniper in a palm tree...
On the second day of Christmas truce, Ho Chi gave to me, Two punji stakes and a sniper in a palm tree...
It got worse, but you get the idea.
Janis was very popular during the war.
Don’t know how Black is Black didn’t make the top ten.

I came from the deep woods and never heard of many of those songs they listed. I thought they came from my Jr. High years and never paid attention to them.
Kind of depends on the period of that era. Beatles, Bob Dylan etc. were big everywhere. And Hollywood has kind of made some songs standard fare for their war movies of that time.
I remember a song called “The Green Berets”.
My buddies from the deep woods tended towards ‘How high’s the water mama?’, ‘ Ring of Fire’ or ‘El Paso’...
I came to enjoy all of it!
Legend had it that Uncle Sam owned ‘The Green Berets’ and ‘Shane’.
You could be on stand down at some long lost LZ and they had one or both?
I still like ‘Shane’.
Them’s the songs my relatives always had on the radidio. I liked them but never got into them. CCR was always my favorites and when I’m Morose or depressed, (most of the time for the past seven years), I throw CCR on.
SSGT Barry Sadler, the Ballad of the Green Beret.
Put Silver Wings on my son’s chest.
Make him one of America’s best.
One hundred men they’ll test one day.
Help him win the Green Beret.
Still rings in my ears...

I spent 66-69 in the Marine Corps and while Creedence and Otis Redding seemed to be played everywhere all the time I only remember the other 8 selections as bracketing my time in country.
Jimi Hendrix, “All Along The Watchtower”.
Barracks!
You had a barracks! Nice!
Rumour had it that the Air Force guys had MATTRESSES!!!!
