Microsoft rolls out first 'major update' to Windows 10 (improved performance and compatibility)

Microsoft has released an update it says is the first major release for Windows 10.

Redmond said the new version of Windows 10 would offer better performance and compatibility with third-party hardware.

"With this update, there are improvements in all aspects of the platform and experience, including thousands of partners updating their device drivers and applications for greater Windows 10 compatibility," wrote Microsoft Windows and Devices executive vice president Terry Myerson.

"Windows 10 also starts rolling out to Xbox One today, and select mobile phones soon."

Microsoft is also courting enterprise customers with the addition of two new services aimed at IT. The Windows Update for Business will allow IT departments to manage how updates and profiles are sent to end users and when patches will be applied for various user groups, whcih could prove handy considering this week's Redmond patch failure.

The Windows Store for Business, meanwhile, will allow IT to control how applications are delivered and installed on company machines. Businesses can maintain their own "store" services for users, and assign different bundles of applications based on user profiles.

The update will also add a new Azure Active Directory to assign a single user profile, and settings for multiple Windows 10 devices and a Mobile Device Management tool allowing IT and management to remotely control and wipe data on Windows 10 devices.

Among the consumer improvements Microsoft is touting with the update are additional features for Cortana, including the ability to add movie reminders and Uber reservations. Microsoft is adding support for Cortana in Japan, India, Australia, and Canada.

Here we go, updating Windows 10, better get used to it ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Or you could stick with Win7 or 8.1, at least for a while...

Good!!!
Maybe the scanner on my printer will start to work again.
It was the only casualty in the update to Windows 10.

Waiting for feedback from the brave ones who will "jump" into this.

That reminds me... Please, does anyone know how to CHANGE the default for Windows 10 to update itself without my consent?

When the time comes I would like to decide the date myself.
There are even suggestions that the strange Freeper bug affecting Freeper "quote" posts is the result of a recent Office 360 Word update that was pushed onto all our computers.

I wish I had stuck with Windows 8.1 (or even 7 before that). I finally upgraded to 10 because I got sick of the nag screens I kept getting. I regretted it almost immediately and still do.

Thanks for the word of caution. We are still holding off. Only a couple of our computers might be good candidates. The rest are probably too old.

I have built enough systems from scratch to know that it can be a real pain to install an OS. Worst of all it is a Microsoft OS and will probably be really buggy until SP1 or SP2.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!

[[When the time comes I would like to decide the date myself.]]

Not only just the date, but also the individual updates- One of the big htigns with manual updates is that we get to read about individual updates, see if they are stable, read what other folks are ayign about it, and also get warnigns if an update is unstable-

But with automatic updates, not only does MS have unfettered aCCess to the computer- but we get all updates, whether they cause problems or not- we have no choice but to get them

Or you could stick with Win7 or 8.1, at least for a while...

I've had two Win10 machines lose the task-bar now... Frozen stiff (even safe)... Still have desktop, but no Start, no Win+Run... No good fix for it that I have found, though when the second one started going hinky, I dropped a shortcut to CMD and FileExplorer on the desktop, which made navigation and repair more possible (you can get to Win 10 'settings' in the ribbon of the file Explorer), and can get to the win 7 control panel from cmdline - Still it took a soft rebuild (saved my data and that's all) from Win 10 Settings to fix it...

Anyone know how to turn on the F8 safe mode selection on boot? What moron got rid of that?

That last one was my main server here at the house... Already took my test bench boxes back to Win7, and I seriously thought about re-installing that server to Win7 too (and certainly will if it happens again). It's already been weird about sharing anyway. Getting sick of it.

Ain't too happy. Knew better too.

Yeah, that's odd alright. You can ask Windows which updates it thinks it has installed, and at least in Win7 you can remove them selectively. I haven't tried doing that in Win10, though.
