Creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000 Starts Kickstarter Campaign to #BringBackMST3K

In a not-too-distant future, you could be watching brand-new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Joel Hodgson, the creator and original host of MST3K, has turned to Kickstarter to campaign for a new season of the cult-classic movie-riffing series. Returning to the line-up are the original bots, Tom Servo and Crow, to mock and joke through each unbearable film.

The asking price? $2 million is the initial goal, which will allow the team to shoot three brand new episodes of MST3K. Each additional $1.1 million after that will allow them to shoot another three episodes, up to 12 episodes.

The goal of all this isn’t just to bring Mystery Science Theater 3000 back for a single run, however, but to prove to the world that fans want the show back in the hopes of getting picked up by another network. In the Kickstarter campaign pitch, Hodgson writes:

If we want a lot more MST3K, we need to work together to prove that there’s still an audience out there that wants MST3K – and that this isn’t all some pitiable delusion – so that we can find a network or online platform who will agree to pick up the show and keep it going… hopefully for another 200+ episodes.

Joel doesn’t have his own money? Loved the show, but not enough to pay for it.

Art is not free. Costs money to hire puppeteers for Crow, Tom Servo and Gypsy. Then there is the other stage staff and writers. Camera people, audio, and visual people. I can see it would cost a lot.

.66 million per episode?

That’s absurd, that show shouldn’t cost more than $50-$60K per episode. $100K at the absolute top end.

Actually he’s trying to get the first three to twelve episodes up and running, not just one. Watch Joels presentation.

Mike Nelson is apparently a bit conservative too

Nelson is married to fellow MST3K writer Bridget Jones, and the pair have two sons. They moved from the Minneapolis, Minnesota area to San Diego, California in mid-2006.[5] Nelson and his family moved back to Minneapolis in 2014.

He has described the role of Christianity in his family as “the very centerpiece of our lives. We’re heavily involved in our church, my wife works with youth groups and churches as her profession, and almost every career and life decision I make depends upon it.” He studies Christian apologetics and cites William Lane Craig and C.S. Lewis as influences.[10]

During a 2004 interview with the fanatic site MST3K Review, Nelson described himself as Protestant and conservative: “I read the National Review cover to cover. Check in at Townhall.com every day. Check the Washington Times daily. Listen to Dennis Prager and Michael Medved on a regular basis. Read Mark Steyn with regularity. Read the Weekly Standard. So, yes, I do vote Republican.”[11] He later referred to the Minneapolis Star Tribune as “the Star and Sickle, or the Red Star Tribune”

I just dont know...

This show was a huge part of my early teen years in the late 80s and early 90s. It is almost sacred.

While Joel is pushing this, it likely isnt going to be the same people(?), and that is going to be tough as the concept really needs the bot’s original voices to not be too different to the original fans.

Certainly they had cast changes, but there is a formula that really had to click.

Damn I hate most reboots. But I love MST3K....but I hate reboots. Please dont mess this up!

But it is so strange how the show started out on public access, and hit it big on Comedy Central with so many low-budget effects and sets being part of the charm. I mean Gypsy was made out a baby car seat!

I suppose the cast isn’t going to work for peanuts though, and movie rights are going to be a pain to pay for.

I could see movie rights but seeing that MST3K did B rate movies, well I would think they would be glad for the air time.

As long as it’s the same people making it, it should be good. Remember Joel is the creator of MST3K.

I figure “Pawn Stars” must cost around two or three hundred dollars per episode.

Yeah but he wants $2 MM for 3 episodes? That’s $2/3 MM each.

With out sponsors it’s tough to do this from scratch all over again. I really wish Comedy Central/Sci Fi had never dropped them, it was a great series. It had the ratings just had a network that sucked. I can see it will cost a fortune to reboot. The fans have been wanting this for a long time and I think they will make it happen. Who knows maybe TLC will put this one and finally toss the Duggars in the trash where they belong.
