In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed, in the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral." The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
They still do, today. I've attended 2 of these memorials over the years

A favorite song and memorable event.
We have a lithograph of the Fitz hanging on our living room wall even though we now live one mile from the Chesapeake Bay.

That’s a link to an auction site that was selling a copy of the same painting. It’s pretty haunting. The artists image is as the Fitz is being carried up between two rogue waves and ready to crack in half.

Heard that song on the radio a couple of weeks ago.
Still as haunting as it was then.

It is worth noting we had a similar event with over 20 dead from a U.S. crewed ship in the Bahamas this year. Maine Mariner knew at least one of them.

I live less than 5 miles east of Lake Michigan, the power and majesty of that mighty lake is beautiful, but, one must respect her. Lake Michigan gives up her dead reluctantly.
