Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below,
To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
A stick and a stake
For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one,
I'll take two,
The better for me,
And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

If only they felt the same way about the Muslim threat.
I recently read up on the Guy Fawkes tradition.
Sadly in England, the origins of the day are almost forgotten. In fact, there are only a few places where public remembrances are done - Greater London, mainly.
There are still some public bonfires in places.
I’ve noted there’s a lot of excitement about the event, but most are unclear about which side of the issue to support. I could see similar sentiment here.
Highly recommended reading, rooted in the Guy Fawkes legend.
Movie version was good, but do read the book first. Yes it's heavily illustrated.
The paper isn’t allowing commentary, so I would be pretty sure that at this point folks think Fawkes was right.
Movie version was ponderous, awful, and had an idiotic homage to Islam.
Guy Fawkes Day is one of those things I never heard about growing up. I knew little about til recently and still don’t. A friend from Britain has told me some about it, but no details stuck with me.
It’s an English thing, a European thing. I think it’s just as well that we are ignorant of it.
"As the Commander in Chief has been apprized of a design form'd for the observance of that ridiculous and childish custom of burning the Effigy of the pope - He cannot help expressing his surprise that there should be Officers and Soldiers in this army so void of common sense, as not to see the impropriety of such a step at this Juncture; at a Time when we are solliciting, and have really obtain'd, the friendship and alliance of the people of Canada, whom we ought to consider as Brethren embarked in the same Cause. The defence of the general Liberty of America: At such a juncture, and in such Circumstances, to be insulting their Religion, is so monstrous, as not to be suffered or excused; indeed instead of offering the most remote insult, it is our duty to address public thanks to these our Brethren, as to them we are so much indebted for every late happy Success over the common Enemy in Canada." ~ Order in Quarters, General George Washington, November 5, 1775.
Murderous Rebellion against the government for religious persecution.
So wonder if it had not been for a delay in the meeting of Parliament due to the lingering traces of bubonic plague in London, King James, Queen Anne, his eldest son and both Houses of Parliament might have all been killed in a single event.
Temptation. One of mine is the chronic suspicion that killing politicians is right in principle. It isn’t, of course, despite the fact that politicians seem bent on proving otherwise.
Thanks.
Interesting.
When I lived there in the 90’s (Yorkshire) there were lots of bonfires at pubs and public parks. Fireworks, too. Then there were our local kids who would make a ‘Guy’ and display him and ask ‘penny for the Guy’ as people passed.
I remember my reading about both - and that they said the meaning and significance was being forgotten.
Odd, that...

Nice piece from Washington; a nearby Catholic Church has a stained glass window which includes excerpts from a speech by Washington expressing gratitude to the Catholic peoples of Spain & France for their aid during the Revolutionary War. He was specific in mentioning their faith.
The problem that objective moral rational upstanding citizens must face about that question is that crazed lunatics will take decisive, albeit wrong, action with consequences the rest of us will have to cope with and take blame for.
